AMP Nominees: How They’d Spend The 30k

Later today, one local act will walk away with 30,000 big ones courtesy of the Australian Music Prize. Ahead of the big announcement, we asked the nine nominees how they rate their chances, who they’d like to see win and, most importantly, how they’d spend the cash.

Beaches

(Antonia Sellbach)

Nominated for:
Their self-titled debut, Beaches.

How would you spend the $30,000?
Definitely on the next album. We'd love to have more time in the studio to make our next record. We'd also spend some of it on touring overseas and locally. And also on a full-time masseuse.

How do you rates your chances?
At this point we're not really sure. All the shortlisted artists are so varied in style and sound and their works are of such a high calibre that anybody could win.

Who, other than you, deserves the prize?
Definitely Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Not only are they a nice bunch of fellas, their album is so so good and their live shows are as well.

Cut Copy

(Mitchell Scott)

Nominated for:
Their sophomore LP, In Ghost Colours.

How would you spend the $30,000?
I’d probably buy a mansion on the moon and a solid gold overcoat.

How do you rate your chances?
Not so great. The Presets have won everything else, so they must be favourites. If not them, maybe something more rock’n’roll will take it out.

Who, other than you, deserves the prize?
Eddy Current or the Presets would make me happy.

C.W. Stoneking

Nominated for:
Jungle Blues, an album inspired in part by Stoneking's experience as a survivor of a shipwreck off Africa's West Coast.

How would you spend the $30,000?
I haven't made any plans for any $30,000.00. And if I did, I wouldn't be goin’ around broadcasting it to the world.

How do you rate your chances?
I rate it at about one in nine, could be higher than that. I haven't heard the other albums, it could be a unanimous decision in my favor, maybe no one will vote for my record, I can't speculate about it.

Who, other than you, deserves the prize?
If it's not me then Eddy Current Suppression Ring will get it. Haven't heard their record but their drummer, Danny, tattooed me last year, a good jungle tattoo and he did a good job of it. Probably his band is good too, they're probably gonna win it, otherwise it'll be me. Don't know who else is in there though, it'll be close I reckon. Actually, aside from me I don't care who wins it.

The Drones

Nominated for:
Their fourth LP, Havilah.

The Drones agreed to comment, then declined 21 minutes later.

Jack Ladder

Nominated for:
Love Is Gone, the follow-up to his 2005 debut Not Worth Waiting For.

How would you spend the $30,000?
On the lucky person I go home with.

How do you rate your chances?
Zero to none.

Who, other than you, deserves the prize?
The Presets. It would be incredible to win everything there is to win.

Tom Cooney

Nominated for:
His debut LP Presque Vu, meaning “almost seen” in French.

How would you spend the $30,000?
I would spend it on a couple of new instruments and the rest would be spent on the recording process. A big chunk would go to the obvious technical necessities but the rest would be spent on musicians. I'd pay them a wage to make sure we could all live, breathe and consume music for a few weeks while we're recording. So many people have helped me out, it'd be great to return the favour.

How do you rates your chances?
Not good. I don't mind though, the shortlist is good enough for me. There's a [$15,000] Outstanding Potential prize, maybe I could get that.

Who, other than you, deserves the prize?
I hope The Drones, Eddy Current Suppression Ring or Jack Ladder.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring

(Mikey Young)

Nominated for:
Their sophomore LP, Primary Colours, which topped M+N’s readers poll in 2008.

How would you spend the $30,000?
Ideas so far have been to tour Hawaii, buy cheap tailored suits in Bali or put it towards a studio space for practice/recording us and other bands. All noble ideas.

How do you rate your chances?
I’m trying not to think about it, honestly.

Who, other than you, deserves the prize?
Ross McLennan or Beaches.

Ross McLennan

Nominated for:
Sympathy For the New World, the follow-up to his debut, Hits From The Brittle Building.

How would you spend the $30,000?
The usual way.

How do you rates your chances?
Low.

Who, other than you, deserves the prize?
I can't think of a single other person who deserves to win as much as me.

The Presets

Nominated for:
Their sophomore LP Apocalypso, which won three awards at last year’s ARIAs.

Didn't respond/“On holidays."

i care of none of these bands. personally in 2008 i brought local albums from

Abby May, Terminal Sound System, the Red Sun Band, Nerissa Campbell, Mountains in the Sky, Heidi Elva, the Hampdens, the Audreys, Pivot, Budspells.

and i'd give my virtual 30cent award to either Heidi or Budspells.
