This is the Make it Up Club gig guide for Mess + Noise.
The Make it Up Club has been presenting a weekly program of avant garde/experimental improvised music in Melbourne for nearly 10 years.
It features local, interstate and international performers who play everything from the acoustic to the electronic, jazz to rock, harsh noise to lilting sonority; what unifies the music presented at the Make it Up Club is that it is predominantly freely improvised and exemplifies the cutting-edge aspects of the genre/s it derives from.
It is the longest-running program of it's kind in Australia, and is currently based at Bar Open (317 Brunswick St Fitzroy, Melbourne), where concerts are presented every Tuesday night starting at 8.30pm.

very cool.
Tuesday 10th July, 2007
Rob Jackson (who played in legendary Melbourne jazzpunk unit, King Idiot), performs extreme and beautiful solo sax.
Ryan McRobb (local ambient noise guitar player: www.myspace.com/mousetrapreplicamusic)
Jerome Noetinger (legendary French analogue noise genius touring Australia at the moment with Metamkine for Liquid Architecture)/Robin Fox (Melbourne's MAX/MSP and laser noise king)/ Anthony Pateras (Melbournes finest prepared pianist and vox-noise scronker) team for a trio that has not been witnessed outside Paris!!!
Sweet night!
Do you know what time Jerome Noetinger (France) /Rob Fox/Anthony Pateras are on? Might have to do some other shit but really, really want to see this!
I would say after 10pm Pelty, but I can't guarantee that.

Adam Simmons (sax's) and Tom Fryer (guitar). 2 stalwarts of Melbourne's avant scene in a rare duet performance.

I think chats with more conventional musical chats may dig the MIUC lineup tonight.
Meter Maid will no doubt bring some sublime and aetherial beauty, whilst the Tom Fryer 4tet will deliver the math-rock improv scronks.
And even chats with more conventional musical tastes; if they can't find any conventional musical chats (which I find highly unlikely).
Yah Tom I'm keen to catch.. but you know.. usual story.
some stiff comp coming from richmond way tonight....

The final instalment of MIUC for March 2013 sees us play host to a full night of guitar and guitarish duos with a frequent and much-loved visitor to our stage - improviser, historian, visual artist and Hawaiian shirt collector Mike Cooper. As the man himself is incredibly multi-faceted, transitioning effortlessly between trad jazz, noise, exotica, ambience and many places in between, four divergent Melbournian string-slingers will be making it up with him - Dean Roberts with his gorgeous post-folk delicacy, Rod Cooper with his textural post-blues (and surname congruence), Ian Wadley with his emotively shambolic melodiousness and Trevelyan Clay with his simultaneous dismissal and embrace of all things musical (and Hawaiian shirt congruence).
• Mike Cooper (IT) & Dean Roberts

This Tuesday at MIUC we attempt to construct a three-pronged audible hypercube to traverse throughout the 40 years of Australian freely improvised music. A rare solo venture into the far reaches of the sonoverse by Louis Burdett, one of the first and finest sonic voyagers to ever truly Make It Up on our soil; anything and everything perceptible by the ear is possible. Ren Walters and Brett Thompson meet to combine and musically discuss their first and second wave interpretations of pedal-enriched post-melodic free jazz guitar for what should be a truly stunning meeting of minds. And Kevin CK Lo divorces himself from the technical and psychological impedances of the bow, evoking from his violinparatus an entirely other but equally lyrical palette of tone colours with variously acquired implements.

This week at MIUC features a cavalcade of industrial-strength noise bruitistes keen on inflicting frequency punishment whilst simultaneously promulgating textural wisdom. For their first public performance since 1995, Sooterkin Flesh will revive the volatile beast that is their aethereal industrial experimental dark isolationist noise ambience on the advent of their 25th year since inception - skulls will collapse. Christopher LG Hill's Porpoise Torture is exactly as the name implies: the sonic extract of Atlantean horror, murky sub-surface din, suffocatingly drenched power electronics, red mist at full saturation. And sax pest Lloyd Honeybrook makes a rare solo appearance to commit some saxual abuse in public, filtering the acoustic architecture of the space and general sonic revulsion through the chamber of his feedback-extirpated woodwind-death knell.
• Sooterkin Flesh feat. Troy Norfolk, Jason Van Den Boogert & Kristian Schäfer (Synthesisers, samples, tape loops, cassette players, turntable, toys, radio, television, bells, metal pipes, drills, strings)
• Porpoise Torture (electronics)
• Lloyd Honeybrook (Hate Sax)

This edition of MIUC draws focus to three idiomatic local groupings that feature some of the Generation Y-sters who are turning to aleatoric means to express their atypical visions for the potentialities of live music. Alice Hui Sheng-Chang and Nigel Brown extend their lush textural duo with the addition of the unpredictably angular rhythms of My Disco's Rohan Rebeiro. The Cross Brothers invoke and recontextualise the slacker minimalist approach of the trans-Tasman noisy drone aesthetic of the 90s with their fraternal guitar abuses. And Stre4m celebrate the lamentations for the passing of the fertile seasons into the inevitable cold depths of a Melbournian winter with their spiritually electroacousmatic pagan devotional music.
• Alice Hui-Sheng Chang (Vocals), Nigel Brown (Modified Accordion) & Rohan Rebeiro (Drums)
• Dan Cross (Guitar) & Patrick Cross (Guitar)
• Stre4m feat. Paddy Gordon, Scott McCulloch & Conor O'Hanlon (Guitar, Bass, Voice, Dictaphones, Drum-Kit & Fiddle)

This Tuesday at MIUC we present four artists dealing with the potentially impersonal nature of electronic music production and proving the cruciality of the id to pleasurable sound production. Norwegian Alexander Rishaug builds on an intimate knowledge of his technological equipment by injecting unbridled curiosity and unprocessed humanity to create richly detailed sonic architectures brimming with eloquent textures and languid melodicism, extending far beyond the usual forensic clinicism of glitch music. NyquistX manifest their spectral perception of future jazz by electronically extending a synth and drum kit in ways that will make you glad you've never heard of Saint Germain. And Robert McDougall revels in his phenomenological approach to electroacoustic music, asserting that sometimes monitoring rather than controlling one's instrument provides maximum levels of absorption.
• Alexander Rishaug (NO) (Laptop, Modular Synthesiser)
• NyquistX feat. Vijay Thillaimuthu (Modular Synthesiser, Electronics) and Sam Price (Drums, Electronics)
• Robert McDougall (Sound)

This week at MIUC we showcase another three divergent musical projects engaged in the improvisatory arts in our fair city. Born and musically trained in Iran, Gelareh Pour represents a fairly unique voice (both metaphorically and literally) in the Melbourne avant scene, on this occasion accompanied by the tripped-out tabla of Phil Coyle and erhu of HakGwai Lau. Maka Khan rip loose with their fiery brand of free jazz, denoting a much yearned-for musical insanity in the emerging generation of VCA-moulded jazz practitioners. And The Secret Tomb, with the self prescribed aim: try to create a vision of 'what music and sound /noise are define', an evocation of some darkness in our universe in a very much synthesised world.
• The Secret Tomb - Carey Knight (Guitar) Ledong Kvelin (Alto Saxophone, Radio Noise Frequency Manipulation, Vocals)
• Maka Khan feat. Mitch Mollison (Electronics), Sarah Galdes (Drums) and Paris Favilla (Voice)
• Gelareh Pour (kamanche, voice), HakGwai Lau (Erhu) and Phil Coyle (Tabla)

This edition of MIUC is certainly one not to be missed, as we are delighted to present one of the most distinct improvising performers of the past decade and two of the figureheads of the ever-strengthening Brisbane weirdcore noise scene. Basque artist Mattin is a multi-faceted frequency abuser of the highest caliber, having held his own with such sonic sparring partners as Tony Conrad, Oren Ambarchi, Dean Roberts, Bruce Russell and Taku Sugimoto; it is truly an honour to have him in Melbourne to bombard our ears and brains. Cultural instigator, film geek, musical mastermind and all-round nice guy Joel Stern is back to expand consciousnesses in all four dimensions with a quadrophonic sonoluminescent work guaranteed to alter synaptical activity. And industrial enfant terrible Andrew McLellan unleashes his noise-hell ritualistic detrituscore project Cured Pink to swell your occipital bun for maximum experiential retention.
• Mattin (BSQ) (sound)
• Joel Stern (Bris) (sound)
• Cured Pink (Bris) (sound)

Danny Fischer is confirmed on drumkit with the Sugg/Wanders Unit.
Recently returned from many years performing in NYC's Downtown Avant Jazz scene, this is an awesome opportunity to witness some modern, fiery free jazz!
Danny Fischer = fucking win!

dayum... sweetness, there goes my morning...
Always shattered to miss a Wanders performance. Thanks BO'D, pieces are reassembling.
I could watch Danny Fischer all day... I still don't get how he plays with his fingers like that, I asked him afterwards and he said it was part of his 30 year plan not to ruin his body, just wow.
Yay!

This week at MIUC is another illustration that meaningful engagement with the traditional roots of free jazz and post-classical improv is still applicable, enjoyable, and evolving with every passing year and emerging generation of music makers (and that Melbourne aint a half-bad place to be circa 2013). Petrichor is a term coined by two Australian scientific journalists to describe the aroma that accompanies the first rain after a long warm dry spell; Petrichor wield strings and flute to aurally evoke the sensations that accompany said scent. The great clash of Rhodes occurs, brandished by Joe O'Connor and James Bowers, facing off with hammers, metal prongs and electromagnetic pickups in an ethereal duo of shimmering intensity. And prolific young jazz (etc). masters Marty Holoubek and Brenton Foster make their Make It Up debut to make up what they think a unique section of space-time flow should sound like, expressed via the universal language of bass and keys.
• Marty Holoubek (Bass) + Brenton Foster (Keyboard)
• Joe O'Connor (Rhodes) and James Bowers (Rhodes)
• Petrichor feat. Alexina Hawkins (Viola), Rowan Hamwood (Flute) & Jessica Fotinos (Harp)

This week at MIUC we showcase one of the most diverse and astute minds in forward-thinking brutal music, the bestial luminary Mat Blackwell, before he retreats to rural misanthropy once again for an indeterminate period of temporal magnitude. Merge Into Stripes sees Blackwell invoke magnetikoccultik analog sourced chaos, transmogrified to Lovecraftian sub-cacophony with the electronic hex prowess of Bendy Hack. Haark sees the Demon flying solo, spreading the pestilence of tumultuous blackened digital speedcore, hacking pathways between the method, validity and scope of sadistic aleatoric atrocities. And Gnaumgn decimate the very fabric of sound itself with their truculent guitar incursion and hellish crossfire on wooden coffins. You've been warned.
• Merge Into Stripes (A D MacHine and Bendy Hack)
• HAARK (A Demon Sheen)
• Gnaumgn (A DMN SHN and Professor Prescott-Steed)
