who shops there?
does anyone not shop there on principle?
anyone have any ideas what is going to happen to the australian stores? bought out by dymocks, or angus & robertson, or closing the doors all together?

i shop there. i have no principles.
i shop there, what's the principle which would stop you doing so ... (i'm ignorant)
i shop there for uni books a lot, but i go to the lygon st store so that i can compare prices with readings. if readings is the same (it's seldom cheaper), i'll buy there. i don't feel all that great shopping there, but as a student with jack-all income, it's the cheapest option for me.
well i shop there too, but i think it's the giant superstore international corporate ideals that many object to.
i'm just curious to know what impact it is going to have on the way we buy books in australia when it goes.
why is it going ? why dont you post a link to something ?
prefer to shop at readings, but if they don't have what i want i cross the road.
the australian bookstores have seen that the borders model works overseas. and here. so why not try and implement a similar setup?
i shop there based on the principle that coolsie fucktards will hate me more for it.
i used to shop there because they really did offer a bigger range of books. '
Perhaps our local chains could try going in a similar direction instead of the piddling pathetic number of books they offer.
but borders isn't as good as it used to be anymore. I tried looking for books by Esther Freud in the last month and couldn't find a thing except for the new one which I had just read.
I first went to borders at the suggestion of smaller independent bookshops.
sorry pops, i thought it was common knowledge. they're not making money in australia and britan, so are closing retail outlets and selling online. remaining open in the us.
borders has a better selection, better layout, and is nicer, and cheaper. why go somewhere else? does it really matter which corporation gets our cash?
had no idea. what will go in the jam factory store and when was this announced ???
last i heard pops they were looking to mass-sell their stores to another chain, so they remain bookstores, but at that point, nothing was final. i don't know the latest.
I don't really buy books and their music section is rubbish, so nah I don't buy stuff there. I just read all their magazines.
Books in Australia are ridiculously expensive, compared to the UK
In the UK I try NOT to shop at Borders
Not cheap and killing domestic equivalents
i thought they were selling up in australia, not closing down.
Borders Australia Sale Attracts Interest
July 16, 2007
SOURCE:The Bookseller
Bookseller Borders Group has had strong interest in the planned sale of its Australian and New Zealand operations from trade and private equity firms, sale advisers KPMG have told Reuters.
KPMG corporate finance executive director Luke Lawrentschuck said an information memorandum will be sent out by the end of July and the sale would probably take three or four months to complete.
''It has attracted a lot of interest from parties in Australia and overseas, including trade and private equity,'' Lawrentschuck told Reuters, adding that Borders' Australian and New Zealand operations were performing very well.
That scanner listening device never works on the cd's i want to listen to.
this wouldn't mean they would no longer be Borders stores, they would just be owned by a group other than Borders.
luke lawrentschuck?

they stopped accepting vouchers about 2 months ago.
anon's right, I was in the Carlton store yesterday and there were huge signs up stating that vouchers are no longer accepted under any circumstances.
Couldn't find anything to tempt me and as others have said, 20% off list price is still far more expensive than buying online. Will keep an eye out for the final week sales though, apparently the remaining Victorian stores have five weeks to go.
Blah, shan't bother then. Now I don't have to go to borders, that's also a win.
just spend $200 at their ebay store
There's going to be a National Bookshop Day in August to help the book industry along. Sounds pretty familiar doesn't it?
I bought a cheap e-reader from the Borders ebay site yesterday. It's a DRM free model so it can handle e-pub files which can be found in huge supply on the torrent sites.
Hmmm, I wonder why bookshops are closing down!
Somewhere, a tobacco executive just had an idea...
Another one bites the dust: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/plus-jobs-to-go-in-colorado-closures/story-e6freuy9-1226075110686
I look forward to National Colarado Day.
Looks like Pearson (the company that owns Penguin) have bought the online arm of REDgroup (the company that owns Borders), AND -- Amazon have bought Book Depository. My sources in the industry suggest this might mean the end of Book Depository's free shipping worldwide.
Reader's Feast is closing. Sad Face Didn't even know they were part of REDgroup.
I got fond memories of that place. Happy memories.
Is it wrong to get nostalgic for bookstores?
shit? really? Thought they were indy, so used to try to get to there.
its a shame, that spots been a bookshop for a while.
Damn, I was just in RF the other day, thinking the demise of Borders and all those A&Rs would help the smaller guys survive. I thought they were independent too, turns out they were the just the cool aunty in the same family! Anyway, the boss-lady there reckons she intends to open a new shop once she gets clear of the whole REDgroup mess. Hope that works out.
I went to Borders in Chadstone today. It was like picking over the carcass of a roast chicken in the fridge after three days.
It made me sick that people who never set foot in bookshops were all over it like a rash, looking for a bargain.
I wonder where all the leftover copies of this will go. Borders seems to have been trying to get rid of their excess for the past couple of years.
borders is closing down full stop.
Borders Australia 2.0?
Now Bookworld: http://www.bookworld.com.au/
Wise move. They had to cut that albatross loose.
