I used to be able to download wmv and avi files on my comp.
everytime I go to do that now it freezes up and I have to "end program now".
been doing so for the last couple of months.
I'm running firefox for my browser and even when I try to update that I get the same deal.
sick of going to the task manager to close down shit that used to work.
I'm not a computer person, so I'm baffled.
cheers
K.K

are you running on vista?
try zapping your p-ram.
it's windows 2000
tried using ie instead of firefox? Firefox has been crashing heaps for me for the last three months or so.
are you left clicking or right clicking then ''save as'' on the link to the media files?
if you're left clicking firefox is probably trying to display the file itself, and whatever plugin it's using is probably causing the problem.
if that's the case go to view > preferances > content tab > file types box > manage > then remove the action for avi and wmb files.
but for some reason Icant save wmv files in ie
I don't even get that far t.dog.
It freezes up then I have to 'end task'
but you click on the link to a file, yeah?
yep
left click to download a file etc
well as soon as you do that, firefox is probably trying to load a plugin to handle the file, and that's what's freezing. if you disable the plugin, it'll just ask you what to do with the file and you should be able to download it.
how do I disable the plug in.
I know I sound like a retard
in the menu, click ''view'', then ''preferances'' - in the dialogue box that comes up go to the ''content'' tab, then in the section at the bottom labeled ''file types'' click on ''manage'' then remove the action for avi and wmv files.
view doesnt have preferences.
all it says is:
toolbars
staus bar
side bar
reload
increase/decreease txt size
etc
by the way I'm running firefox on this
yeah sorry it's under ''edit''.
edit doesnt have preferences either,
I tried
tools> options> downloads.
thats as far as I've worked out. tried removing avi and wmv
the trierd clicking on a wmv file and it foze again

You could use something like this:
https://www.virtualbox.org/
And run a machine within a machine so you can machine when you want to machine.
(ie have a clean one as base, and then launch virtualbox to run another copy of windows 7 with all the bells and whistles)
'sup dog
Looking into that... Won't that make the Windows 7 within the Windows 7 run slow? Therefor not so good for games?
well of course be some performance hit, but depends on the games you want to play I guess.
Otherwise, it should be doable, a quick google leads too
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Install-more-than-one-operating-system-multiboot
Thank 'nony. That looks doable. I already have a partitioned drive, and a version of Win 7 installed with all the crap on startup. Judging by this I could install a new, clean version to the other section of the drive? Sorry to spell it out, just want to make sure I'm not jumping to conclusions.
Yes, you can install a second copy of Windows to the empty partition. Note: you'll need a different product key (or a cracked copy of Windows 7) .
I have an alternate suggestion: a second user account. It's not the same level of separation, but is a hell of a lot easier / less risky. Dual booting two copies of the same OS on a single hard drive will end in tears, eventually.
May I suggest
Good idea checkers. Will give that a go tonight.
checkers, this was a fucking great idea. Now I can have a user with nothing on startup and the whole shit looking like windows 3.1 to not waste any resources.
Forgive my ignorance on this. But I'm selling my old iMac. Have re-installed Operating System and used the erase and install option. Am I safe in assuming that everything on the hard drive has now been deleted. I don't want to end up finding out the person who has bought will somehow access my email details, bank details etc. Or am I being unnecessarily paranoid?
Yes, your history of collecting obscure Eastern European porn should be erased.
steveholt if you're really paranoid hit the 35 pass option in the disc utility

Presumably re-installing the operating system would have done that anyway?
I think reinstalling the operating system would not be expected to permanently erase all the data. It probably would have just listed all the sectors as being available for overwriting. Permanent deletion is a very slow process.
Quite a bit of data would still be there and retrievable with the right tools.
It's mainly music and photos that was on the hard drive anyway. Stuff like passwords for email accounts would be removed ?
i should say that when re-installing the OS there was an erase and install option which restored the computer to the factory settings.
If you followed these instructions to perform the erase & reinstall, your data is totally gone for anyone unwilling to spend less than $10 000:

Yep that's what I did.
okay, so i've got a tv show as a .mp4 which i have housed an external hard drive - when i play it thru the pc it's fine but when i play it thru the ps3 it seems to play at double speed with no sound.
what gives?
