some old boy in a pub once said to me that most bush fires were started by members of the CFA, is that utter bollocks?

CFA firefighter major suspect in Marysville inferno

EXCLUSIVE

Police are on the verge of a major breakthrough in the investigation into the Marysville Black Saturday fires that left 38 people dead and thousands homeless.

Detectives have secretly questioned a member of the Country Fire Authority who is now being treated as the major suspect for lighting the blaze.

Detectives from Taskforce Phoenix's Operation Groove have found where the fire was lit and initially identified a small number of suspects.

But the investigation is now centred on the CFA suspect, who has been questioned and released pending further inquiries.

Detectives are increasingly confident they are on the verge of an arrest.

Police say the fire was lit when conditions were at their worst - about 2.30pm on February 7 as temperatures soared well above 40 degrees - near the abandoned Murrindindi sawmill, south of Yea.

Taskforce investigators into the Marysville blaze, codenamed Groove, has found evidence to suggest the Marysville, Narbethong and Murrundindi fires all started from one source then spotted to separate blazes. Official figures show 34 people died in Marysville and four at Narbethong.

This month, Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Dannye Moloney made it clear police were closing in on their suspect.

''We know the fire was deliberately lit and we want to apprehend and prosecute the persons responsible,'' he said

''We are looking at some strong leads that indicate certain behaviours and we intend to pursue those, but of course we need the community to give us the information to help us support that.

''We would like to hear from people who were in any of the camping areas, trail bike riding, or who were in the vicinity of Wilhelmina Falls Road on the day,'' he said.

It's certainly happened in the past. My parents often talk about a bloke they knew in the Hunter who would start fires then go home to wait for the call to come put them out.

Why is no one posting about the royal commission?

SheikYerbouti  said about 4 years ago:

Because I am shocked at some of the things I am hearing from the honchos. But I am loathe to post thoughts as many know where I am coming from, so it wouldn't be appropriate.

MissAustralia2003  said about 2 years ago:

nope - too sad. this year the predicted locust plagues will eat any tinder out there so there'll be no fire fuel - unless biosecurity drench every farm in locust killing chemicals.
