Metal Music Thread

whosgotthecrack?  said about 6 years ago  or at  1:29PM on Monday, October 16 2006 in music

Hey, having spent the past three weeks viewing Jeff Krulik's cult short film Heavy Metal Parking Lot nightly while doing sound for a fringe show about satan and metal, I am really keen to get a bit of metal into my music collection

am thinking Black Sabbath, Slayer, Scorpions, Megadeth (who I actually saw live with my brother back when i was about 16), Iron Maiden, Judas Priest

any recommendations as to albums or particular songs?

I don't mind more extreme stuff either, the weirder the better (like the Young Gods - that cabaret style album of theirs was great...)

diecide, godflesh, kreator. definately get reign in blood by slayer though.

  • Black Sabbath: Any of the first four albums...even some Dio-era stuff is good.
  • Slayer: Again, anything up to and including "Seasons...". All great albums...especially "Reign In Blood"
  • Scorpions: Wouldn't have a clue.
  • Megadeth: Dunno, never really got into them. I think Megadeth fans blow over "Rust In Peace" though.
  • Iron Maiden: Any album up to and including "Seventh Son...". Can't really go wrong with ANY of the early albums.
  • Judas Priest: Hmmmm, go for "Sad Wings Of Destiny", "British Steel" and "Defenders Of The Faith". If you like those then get into the rest. I love Priest but they have a history of consistantly releasing one good album, then one shit album.

slayer "god hates us all". more important than anything else they did. don't listen to the rest of the world on this one!

tangy_zizzle  said about 6 years ago:

If you're serious about "the weirder the better" I would recommend "Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale."

Avante Garde metal with a carnival-like atmosphere. It's like nothing else you'll ever hear. Weird.

Inactivist  said about 6 years ago:

Weirder the better? Try a bit of freaky psych death metal from Canberra's very own Alchemist.

Rainbow - A Light In The Black is the best fucking metal song ever recorded.
Everything else on their Rising album is a very close 2nd.
Everything else on other metal albums is 3rd and below.

*lots out again*

you should own 'screaming for vengeance' too

whosgotthecrack?  said about 6 years ago:

tangy that sounds excellent!

are you a young gods fan at all?

they had that great dark carnivale thing, and did albums is either french, german or english

i've always thought there should be a metal WOMAD - think of it! all those northern and eastern european metal bands at nighttime in a park in adelaide!

LockingPlier  said about 6 years ago:

Fuck yes, I forgot about "Screaming...".

tangy_zizzle  said about 6 years ago:

I like what I've heard of young gods. Any paritcular album I should listen to for a proper introduction?

Modi  said about 6 years ago:

Which is the one that they got dragged through court over, Pliers?

LockingPlier  said about 6 years ago:

Are you talking about Priest?

mexicans666  said about 6 years ago:

High On Fire - "Blessed Black Wings" and "Surrounded By Thieves"

Modi  said about 6 years ago:

Oh, and don't forget

  • Budgie - Fore Arm Smash

For your tennis oriented metal needs

Modi  said about 6 years ago:

Yeah, sorry, delayed response

LockingPlier  said about 6 years ago:

I'm pretty sure it was the 'Stained Class' album.

Yep:

In 1990, the band was involved in a civil action that alleged they were responsible for the suicide attempts in 1985 of two Reno, Nevada, USA boys, James Vance and Ray Belknap. (Belknap died instantly by shooting himself in the face with a sawed-off shotgun; Vance also shot himself but survived, severely disfiguring his face in the attempt. He died approximately three years later due to the effect of his painkillers.) The boys' parents and their legal team alleged that a subliminal message of "do it" had been included in the song "Better By You, Better Than Me" (from the Stained Class album), and that the command triggered the suicide attempt. The suit was eventually dismissed on its merits, as the band had pointed out that if you were to play any song backwards and tell someone there was a message, it'll sound as though there actually is. The ambiguity of the alleged message was also taken into question. Rob Halford pointed out that "do it" had no direct message, commenting "Well...do what? Mow the lawn? Have a drink?"

Modi  said about 6 years ago:

I love that case. They found their own "back masked messages" and played them in court, too. Ridiculous stuff. Get that one, crackers, and play it backwards

So.. the drummer from Absu... pretty much the funniest cunt I have ever seen perform. I still can't tell if they are taking the piss or not. Weak guitar sound, but otherwise enjoyable.

tangy_zizzle  said about 1 year ago:

I'm guessing the Absu show at the bendigo tonight is sold out. anyone know?

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Anyone tempted by the Kill Em' All show tonight at the EBC? I was but $20 is a touch steep.

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Cathedral & Paradise Lost... this promises to be a winning event.

what's the general consensus on the new baroness double record?

Two documentaries on metal I can recommend. 'Flight 666' follows Iron Maiden on tour and 'Get Thrashed' a good doc on the eighties metal scene in the U.S
