Steven Stills

buffytufnel  said about 4 years ago  or at  6:23AM on Wednesday, June 18 2008 in music

Steven Stills. Such an emotive voice, such force behind it. The rough edges. I just love it. Been playing him all night - got Steven Stills 1 and Steven Stills 2, Manassas, a live album (one side acoustic, one side rockin'), the CSNY and Buffalo Springfield catalogs - any other fans out there to recommend other records of his?

Nice Firebird too:

And does anyone else see a more-than-passing resemblance to Dave Butterworth from The Double Agents?

Bon Scott  said about 4 years ago:

Steven Stills is a genius

Coke and Neil Young drove him insane

High water mark for me is Buffulo Spingfeilds For what it is worth.

could have sworn that it was Stephen Stills and his freebasing habit which drove Neil Young insane...

Reverb - a bit from Column A, a bit from Column B

Fielding Mellish  said about 4 years ago:

I saw CSN on Saturday. Stills had a bandaged up Knee before the show when he turned up. Yes, he was wearing one of those shirts he designed. That cunt can fucking play guitar like no other.

sum1  said about 4 years ago:

Saw him with CSN last year. His voice is shot but the man can still scorch on the geetaw.

Psyclops  said about 4 years ago:

I have a few early demo boots and some live 70's gigs that absolutely kill. He and Young were two bulls in a ring, each trying to vye for dominance. A firey but lethal combo which made for some great music.

Agree. His guitar work in Almost Cut My Hair was to die for. His vocals in For What It's Worth were awful, but that was secondary to the fact we got to see the song played live.

Dan_Crad  said about 4 years ago:

As Reverb said, it's Stephen - not Steven!

But yes, love his work - the first Manassas album is a fave of mine. I have a nice 2 disc vinyl gatefold copy of it as well!

JunkiePhil  said about 4 years ago:

Love his song on the Dick Cavert woodstock episode.

Angelic  said about 4 years ago:

yeah digging on Stills firebird sound.

medicineman  said about 4 years ago:

i love the demo record that came out the other year... very very good.

stephen stills and stephen stills 2 are great records....

and let's not forget the great Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.

I have a great DVD bootleg of CSN&y in 74 at wembley and there are defintie guitarfireworks between him and young

Angelic  said about 4 years ago:

some of their jamming is so pitifully woeful that it's like the worst noodling pre-hair metal shredding ever done, but for that it's kind of nice to listen to such fucked jamming on pentatonics...And sometimes yeah they lock in and deliver pentatonic madness

both of these cats around 1970 were so jimi influenced. Neil goes more scrappy and with his trademark scratching the fucking one note to death solo's and Stills try's his hand at some classic blues motifs that rarely work out...haha great fucking song writing tho...

sum1  said about 4 years ago:

So what's an example of good duelling guitars Angelic? Just curious. If you even mention Steve Vai your cred is shot.

Angelic  said about 4 years ago:

hahaha

duelling guitars? Look I aint saying it's all shit. I'm saying that it is tempestuous just like we know...

Duelling guitars? well the live version of Hotel California by the eagles around 1976 has some REALLY mean guitar duels on it, where they take the original lines and work them...pretty much amazing guitar players in that band no matter what you think of their vibe, but in 76 they were kings of this shit...

Apart from that I dunno. Not a fan of the concept. Mainly for crowding and space issues. I like hearing one guitarist meander around with open thoughts finding inspiration on the night or what have you..

I guess the messy blue cathedral was going for this fuzzed out psychadelia shit but it was mainly shit with cliche heaped on cliche to my guitar ears..to easy to do that shit...just get a bag on and hit record...

Dan_Crad  said about 4 years ago:

The Stills/Young duelling on Buffalo Springfield's 'Bluebird' is fantastic! Stills on acoustic, Young on electric.

sum1  said about 4 years ago:

Aye to that.

Ive seen that. That one concert was enough for punk to start. Cocaine! Possibly the worst concert video Ive ever seen. So bad, its really bad.

Pjeony  said about 4 years ago:

I dont care for Steven Stills.

JunkiePhil  said about 4 years ago:

Haha...
I lent him that, and I think he's watched it more times then I have after having it for over a year.

ashthetenth  said about 4 years ago:

i'm SURE he has!

Oscarwilde  said about 1 year ago:

4 way street is the ultimate stills I wish I had a soul album.

Dan_Crad  said about 1 year ago:

This is the ultimate Stephen Stills album.

bamesjaker  said about 1 year ago:

Andrew Tanner was doing some serious Stephen Stills channelling the other night during the Sand Pebbles' set.

Godzilla  said about 1 year ago:

I have this one:

it's good ,probably not his best, but has some nice covers of Everybody's Talkin and Rocky Mountain Way.

4+20 is a real highlight though.

chimpassgimp666  said about 1 year ago:

So what's the best live album then? Also what is Long May You Run
Young-Stills Band like?

Dan_Crad  said about 1 year ago:

I think Godzilla meant 'Live' is not his best album; live or studio.

Oscarwilde  said about 1 year ago:

Long may you run rules..got it on a boot somewhere

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB9pf_paEZg&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I thought I'd piss stills off by posting a Neil song

Oscarwilde  said about 1 year ago:

I had 4 way street on vinyl for a while, I aint heard all the live shit CSN or CSN&Y but I can vouch it's a worthy addition if you want the full mckoy.

Oscarwilde  said about 1 year ago:

I like stills but he's so safe..I like Neil plowing out into crazy land and getting deep. Stills, yeah he's got only a little bit of soul..

I put a mate onto stills. Suited him.

chimpassgimp666  said about 1 year ago:

Does he also like Don Henley and tell you that *Hotel California *is the greatest album ever recorded?

TheBigFella  said about 1 year ago:

You lack sensitivity, 'slayer.

Oscarwilde  said about 1 year ago:

Bullshit I do. He's so fucking generic. I know why Neil hates his guts.

Oscarwilde  said about 1 year ago:

Yeah he's one of them chimp 666

Oscarwilde  said about 1 year ago:

Lulz bigfella. Soz

TheBigFella  said about 1 year ago:

'slayer! You scheming, grasping egotist, you're still spending your time pontificating to this retinue of craven sycophants.
Learn from it.

Oscarwilde  said about 1 year ago:

Nah not really. Waiting to hoe into my hoe and this bottle of ballantines.

Go write some shit for tha Sydney suburbs thread. I Gotta learn from it.

chimpassgimp666  said about 1 year ago:

Kinda why Stills didn't kick on. Well Neil was really the only talent with any kind of longevity. Sure that little Crosby cunt was a talent but will be remembered for being more than an annoying little self preserving egotistical cunt really.

TheBigFella  said about 1 year ago:

I can no longer tolerate the noxious presence of any suburb other than the one in which I reside.
It's a steep learning curve.

Oscarwilde  said about 1 year ago:

He had some troubles, Crosby..

Stills ..fuck him. Yeah.

bigdaddykane  said about 10 months ago:

I'm gonna get Mananamamas now. Unless I already have it and have never listened to it, and then I'm gonna listen to it.

bigdaddykane  said about 10 months ago:

OK I've got it.

Arthurly  said about 10 months ago:

I also have had Mananamamas in my collection for years. Must listen to it one of these days....
