Mo  said about 4 years ago  or at  2:46PM on Monday, November 24 2008 in music

anyone else dig this record??

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

i guess no one does hahahaha

oh well you're missing out

shaun  said about 4 years ago:

if no one on M+N likes it, it must be shit

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

hahahaha god luv ya shaun

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

fkn pressed it before i was finished...

they can go listen to Kanye West instead......

Dexter Ramone  said about 4 years ago:

I love this record. The show at the dale this year was amazing too.

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

yeah i know YOU like it hahaha

just wondered if it crossed over to these indie folks...

Dexter Ramone  said about 4 years ago:

I'm suprised it hasn't to be honest. Its sound is unashamedly Bruce Springsteen, with a much more honest and raw approach to songwriting.

medicineman  said about 4 years ago:

never heard of it as i don't pay attention to new music..... but i would be keen to hear it on your recommendation Mo.

chipswithgravy  said about 4 years ago:

i'm with dexter on this one... they were amazing at the melb show too.

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

its like a punky bruce springsteen medman

medicineman  said about 4 years ago:

cool - i will have to check it out..

chipswithgravy  said about 4 years ago:

mo - do you have sink or swim? it's pretty awesome as well.

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

yeah i do have sink or swim - fkn GREAT record

but unlike most of my mates - i prefer the 59 sound

chipswithgravy  said about 4 years ago:

i'm with you on that one. it's a brilliant record.

Dexter Ramone  said about 4 years ago:

Its a different approach. I think 59 sound is much more mature, whereas Sink or swim felt the need to use a lot more punkish riffs to build.

NakedApe  said about 4 years ago:

Sink or Swim for me but i like both records a lot. Fucking great live show, however there are actual tunes involved so i'm sure that's not very fashionable

chipswithgravy  said about 4 years ago:

ha! good point NakedApe!

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

yeah good songs just doesn't wash these days...

JBR  said about 4 years ago:

just got this record... its freaking awesome!

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

fuck oath - its great innit!!!!!!

best record of 08 without question

JBR  said about 4 years ago:

I like it better than Sink Or Swim too...

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

YAY

someone who agrees with me on that!!!!!

heaps of dudes i know hate the overt springsteen-ness and the reverb

but i LOVE the verb on the vox like that - kinda old school but it suits it to a tee

such brilliant songs too

a big hcg van favourite

ed  said about 4 years ago:

I never knew about this! Damn punk bands releasing albums every year. I'm gonna have to check this out when I can.

sum1  said about 4 years ago:

Have a couple songs, like them both a great deal. Sounds a little Westerbergy too. Lots of people are afraid of things that have that ambitious big rock sound. Gotta be all into obscuring and faddling about to win coolsie fans. Fuck that, good songs are good songs.

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

word sum1

fkn word

le_disco  said about 4 years ago:

i have been listening to this album religiously for months, just never thought to look it up here :)

so fucking good

im going to listen to it again right now ITS THAT GOOD

im surprised it hasnt been picked up here yet too mo, NME gave the 59 sound (the track) a glistening review about 6-9 months ago

le_disco  said about 4 years ago:

wait, im thinking of hype machine

i hope NME doesnt touch this one!

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

yeah classic rock UK gave them awesome props too - the album is one of the top albums of 08

its a fucking great record

but dude - great songs played well just aint cool ya know?

le_disco  said about 4 years ago:

when i was in townsville over christmas the memory card in my phone went so i lost all of my music, i spent hours scouring the internet (on my phone) trying to find gaslight anthem tracks to download, thats all i wanted

i got my phone bill this week, $200 worth of data charges for 5 or 6 songs but fuck me it was worth it!!!!!

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

night i wake up with the sheets soaking wet its a pretty good song baby u know the rest = genius

le_disco  said about 4 years ago:

maybe mo, maybe you know the rest!!!

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

sorry i meant maybe - was trying to type before my boss walked over hahaha

however u realise instead of spending hundreds of dollars on your data limit etc

you could have just bought the album?

le_disco  said about 4 years ago:

thought about it

but no cd player

and it was way too hot to go anywhere

i just wanted my fix ok :(

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

ahhh i see

well lesson learnt eh - next time

DON'T GO TO TOWNSVILLE!!!!

hahahahaha j/k

le_disco  said about 4 years ago:

haha i think we both know mo that it is NEVER HAPPENING AGAIN

ahhhh, just finished the record. confirming it is still amazing.

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

ken oath chicken loaf

its a ''van favourite'' for hcg

Dexter Ramone  said about 4 years ago:

Damnn. Gonna have to listen to them again tonight. I was trying to wean myself off this album.

thenewmeatloaf  said about 4 years ago:

yeah, not bad. just found this last week. played some to my Hold Steady-lovin' mates, figuring they'd like it, what with all the Springsteen comparisons being thrown around. one of them reliably informs me that they sound VERY much like the Killers. Is he right? I haven't really heard them either....

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

nah not like the killers at all in my opinion

Dexter Ramone  said about 4 years ago:

His voice is very Brandon Flowers. I can see the comparison.

Its like Killers with out the douche, thrown into the Americana of the Boss, and the energy of Against Me.

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

yeah i just don't see it

its not over wrought over emoted like the killers..

tenrapid  said about 4 years ago:

Dex, his voice is Brandon on Sam's Town, nowhere else. but I finally got addicted to the 59 sound too.

though I think it's overwrought in a different way... it seems to be more earnest than the killers, but I guess that's depending which side of the fence you sit on. Not having as much emotion in the vox doesn't make it any less overwrought. maybe a little less melodramatic.

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

i don't think its over wrought with the gaslight anthem.... i think its kinda fitting if that makes sense

i just don't believe that brandon flowers bloke...

that could just be me...

tenrapid  said about 4 years ago:

yeah, agree to disagree. haha, I don't know if I do either but I stopped trying to work that out and just enjoy it for what it is... I don't think he's taking the piss out of his audience at least. :P

Dexter Ramone  said about 4 years ago:

I don't think I've ever seen a more genuine frontman onstage. The beaming smile on his face throughout the whole Annandale show was incredible. I sincerely could not believe that he was playing in Australia to a sold out crowd who sang every word back to him.

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

maybe its just cause i can't stand the killers...

either way

LISTENING TO THIS RECORD AGAIN - FUCKING BRILLIANT

PERFECT ALBUM

le_disco  said about 4 years ago:

what do you think of the old record, 'sink or swim'

drive is a personal fav

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

i think its good - but not as outstanding as the 59 sound

which is a much more ''realised'' album and much more cohesive as a piece of art

thenewmeatloaf  said about 4 years ago:

they were on Letterman last night. Farken tops!

Mo  said about 4 years ago:

yeah

bill hicks mum AND the gaslight anthem = radical

MelonHCST  said about 10 months ago:

So, the new one is pretty great so far

lolsmith  said about 10 months ago:

This band have trouble being bad. 59 Sound was epic, American Slang only got better with age, and the new songs seem pretty cool. They're progressing slowly but surely and that is cool. A major label hasn't hurt them in any way as of yet.

Sunnyboyz  said about 10 months ago:

fantastic band, the new album is great.

mrmagoo  said about 8 months ago:

Really liking the new album

But why oh why did they bother covering Sliver??

mrmagoo  said about 3 months ago:

just noticed they are touring in May, playing the Palace on the 15th

Dan_Crad  said about 3 months ago:

2/1 on the Smith Street Band getting the support, but then, Australian promoters don't have a great record of late picking suitable supports for internationals.

Dexter Ramone  said about 3 months ago:

Plus Soundwave touring are doing the shows, so it'll probably be some random screamo band from the central coast doing the full tour.
