Me being a massive GRRM fanboy the news that this series is on the way is rad news. The filming of the pilot has recently wrapped, and is in post-production in the hope of being greenlit, which with the amount of buzz surrounding even that already seems a nigh-on certainty. Apparently they're using much of the production crew that worked on the Rome series, and with the massive success of that along with shows like The Tudors this could well be a bit of an unlikely hit. As long as they keep the production costs down to a realistic level, a mistake Rome made. The plan apparently is to adapt every book into a season (there's currently four books, a fifth due within the year, and another two to come).
For those who haven't read the series, it's one of the better examples of the modern trend in fantasy where the tropes and cliches are flipped around, with the more ''realistic'' aspects of medieval courts and intrigue emphasised rather than the typical magic and paupers-come-heroes. I think it has real possibility of working out as long as they manage to avoid it turning out like Xena or that awful Terry Goodkind thing.
There's also some real surprises and cliffhangers, especially in the first book, that are sure to make for good telly. And lots of violence and sex scenes.

Partying with the Khal.
Pretty pissed that photo's gone. Oh well.
Ten minute behind-the-scenes featurette shown prior to Boardwalk Empire last night.
''The Sopranos in Middle Earth'' was apparently the one-line pitch.
Just finishing the first book now - pretty good page turner and not too out there.
I got through all four books - about 3200 pages. His technique gets a little repetitive, but you just have to know what happens next.
Fifth book - 900 pages - just announced for July.
New trailer - NSFW.
pumped for the show. mr trafficsounds is a fan, got me to read book 1 but it took me forever to get into it initially.
sneak peek: first 15 mins of ep 1 available to watch online
They certainly have the look of the Wall and the North right. Should be a good series.
i've in advertantly become a GoT fangirl in the last week or so. last friday, the food trucks were out in LA with a special game of thrones menu devised by top chef judge, tom colicchio and since it was close to my house, i went to the friday one, where they were serving the winterfell menu (choice of either head cheese and farrow with dried fruit or seared venison on a stick), and the lemon cakes which were divine!
lo and behold, george rr martin made an appearance (he didn't go to the other food truck days) AND he went down the line of about 300 people or so and personally greeted each and everyone of us! we chatted a little about australia, and then i took a photo with them.
and then this morning, ust outside my gym (which is in the same complex as the HBO offices), the replica iron throne was just sitting outside ready to have your photo taken with it! even though i was all scrubby looking in my gym clothes, and only just woken up, i still took a silly photo for mr trafficsounds' sake.
so there you go. this weekend, i'm making a GoT themed menu of my own, to celebrate the premiere. geeking out or what!
HURRY UP
no wonder he's never going to finish his book.
'Tis up on the torrents.
lol @ hughsie. book 5 is finished though. i watched the first ep - yay! really good, only dubious moment was the obvious green screening of bran against the skyline, all else was a fantastic translation from book to screen.
and those (fake) direpups are soooo cute!
i've been watching that new camelot series, but this is lookin much better.. can't wait to get home & watch.
Enjoyed that!
pretty solid start. lol'd as soon as peter dinklage was on screen.. chillest lil person on earth.
Peter Dinklage and Iain Glen stood out strongly from the rest of the cast
I liked it. Good atmosphere, especially at the start. The dothraki wedding was funny, they're kllingons in this show
NO!
i didn't mind it. haven't read/heard about the books before. will keep watching

Watch Venture Bros.
YESSS. high five
I've filled the void with Nathan For You.
go team venture!
you're quite clearly a very cool and switched on individual, roasty. you appear to like so many of the same things as me.
At least there's still Q&A to get me through a Monday night......
Oh! You're here!
Not sure what you mean MrsGideon?
Winter is coming. Winter(time) is here?
Ah, touche`!
I tried to ease the withdrawals by watching The Awakening, an old-fashioned ghost movie starring a VERY young Bran Stark (and Jimmy McNulty).
It was rubbish. Maybe I should have gone for Cersei in Dredd, or Jaime in Headhunters.
Headhunters is great. Davos is in Outsiders a decent/passable sci-fi on ABC now.
If we're going to keep to this no spoilers from the books rule don't tempt fate by making predictions about what will happen in the story. THAT is tempting fate!
That weasily wildling- who went in the bird when Jon Snooo gave him what for...are we to presume he now lives in the bird or is he just plain dead?
This isn't a spoiler because, by the start of this book (that the series follows) the logic of the whole warging thing is explained as, yes in the moment you are dying you can make one last jump and there you stay. Unless Orrell figures out a morse code pecking system he ain't in the story no more.
I just assumed his bird friend attacked of his own volition.
Like how Greywind attacks people.
oh shit
i totally forgot this had started!
thank. you.
In my continuing quest for a half-decent horror movie, I watched Mama last night. Once again, rubbish... but it DID have Jaime Lannister as twins, and Jessica Chastain as Suze De Marchi. 1.5 stars.
i also endorse the Headhunters vote. sadly the copy we watched kind of fucked up a bit and we had to wait about 45 mins to watch the last 15mins. ruined the flow but not the film overall.
easily 4 better than cliffhanger
I've read the [original source material], and intend to watch the fillum as soon as I remember to actually acquire a decent copy.
Thinking I might start watching GoT again from scratch. I've seen S1 three times already, but S2 just the once.
we usually do a previous season binge before a new one starts. we have the first two on bluray so no doubt some time in the future we'll watch it ALL again. that's not depressing in the least.
dunno if this has been posted already but there's a pretty great 10min interview with railroad on conan. his main take away from it contravenes the first rule of this thread (mentioning the [original source materials]).
no real spoilers
