We are due for our 57th general state election later this year.
Centrebet is giving Labor odds at $1.14 to retain power, against $5.10 for the Coalition to take power.
Issues include public transport/myki, liquor licensing, public housing, water/the desalination plant...
Any thoughts?

What do people think about Brumby?
He seems like a kind of nice fellow really doesn't he?
Or do yous think he's a cunt?
casts vote for Sydney
I think the ALP will win. I can't see a Kennett upset at the moment. If the Government can distance itself from the public transport mess it should go OK for them.
Hmm. I'd be surprised if you could.
This thread will take off one day. Wait and see.

oops
With those odds, you'd be mad to bet against the ALP. They will lose a few seats, but probably to independents, I am guessing. Most people think Ballyhoo is a right prat.
Whiteboard notes embarrass ALP
LEAKED notes from an election planning meeting suggest the Brumby government will offer little new policy but concentrate on attacking the opposition between now and the November poll.
Under the heading ''Priorities'', they suggest Labor should complete its ''key agenda'' but otherwise offer nothing ''new'' unless necessary as a ''political response''.
Under a third heading, ''Better at politics'', the notes suggest Labor improve the selling of its message and concentrate on inner-city seats where government MPs are under threat from the Greens.
This sounds like an absolutely terrified state Labor party.
Shithouse. Why don't they actually DO something?
Scaremongering from Labor.
^ I would have thought it was obvious from the Federal election results that Labor has to actually offer its progressive constituency something they want rather than just rely on attacking the greens. The usual greens want to give children heroin, a vote for the greens is a vote for (insert party here) smears aren't going to be enough to this election.
I'll be voting Greens. Take that Brumby.
fuck i hate state politics.
Me too. There is no way I could vote Labor with their appalling arrogance and lack of actually doing anything.
A couple of months ago I wrote a letter to the Brunswick Labor MP Carlos Carli about puppy mills and why these are still even legal in victoria. I went on his website to find his address and the front page pretty much only consisted of banners and statements attacking the FEDERAL greens over their opposition to labors ETS. Sent a letter off and didn’t even get a response. I think this pretty much sums up Labors attitude towards the inner suburbs and their born to rule the northside mentality.
state greens will probably drag out adam bandt and say ''look, results, and he's going to be effective, you too can make this happen!''
they'd be scared in Melbourne and Richmond and Brunswick I reckon
Abolish state governments. That'd get my vote.
Carlo Carli isn't running for the seat of Brunswick anymore, he announced his retirement a while back. I'm guessing he's gone and done a Lindsay Tanner to avoid losing his seat.
Brumby and the ALP have pretty much done nothing for their entire stint in office. Will be interesting to see how they approach this election with a revitalised Liberal party and with the greens looking like obliterating them in the inner suburbs.
Sorry actually the one thing they have done is had a good crack at destroying melbournes live music and night time scenes with the 2am lockouts, tough licensing restrictions etc etc.

think it is a misconception that liberals hate arts/music, that is surprising people think this. think arts can be liberal actually, they actually thrive in this envirionment. suppose it depends what you constitute as art. think it maybe a good article to write something about this. it interests me
it is also upto VCAT to make decisions on liqueur licencing, think the labor government tried to stop the oxford trading 24hr liqueur but lost Exford Hotel ruling
or maybe robert doyle. think the government may have been going to bring in legislation it stop it trading. I dont know
Usually I ignore people handing out 'how to vote' cards. But I was tempted to tell the old Mediterranean lady handing out the liberal cards: 'Go back to where you came from you old wog! Come here in boats! How dare you! You're a drain on the economy, we live in an economy, not a society, you hear me! We in the liberal party don't need people like you'. But I didn't have the heart.
It took me an hour and a half to vote too Sunnyboyz...I just stood there trying to make up my mind! You must live in St Kilda.
Haha... Fitzroy Town hall was the bitch of a voting office this time around... Absentee vote and all they had was one tiny little PDA between 3 people.
It almost got to the point where I was willing to cop a fine...
In St Kilda we got to queue disneyland style only to have the yuppie behind me probably cancelling out my vote.
brumby press conference on now, live cross on 774
brumby conceded.
Can we send all of the eastern suburbs to Queensland where they belong? They'll all retire there in the next 15 years anyway.
Would have been nice to hae had some $$$ thrown on the coalition...
Nice speech John Brumby. And thanks for getting rid of Kennett back in the day. Bracksy might have been Premier, but the regional campaigning where the election was won was your work. You did some good things along the way too.
Good on you,
HHH.
Stephen Mayne to hold balance of power in the upper house?
that could add a bit of fun into politics, provided we don't have to see him in his togs too.....
???
i think we have become Queensland already, ghostofbarry.
It took me about 10 minutes to vote. About thirty seconds was spend walking in and getting my name checked off, and the remaining time was spent numbering the boxes. Then I went home and got drunk to celebrate.
Same. 5 minute task. The best time to go is between 5 and 6pm on your way out somewhere. They were even playing Billy Jean in the booth to get me in the mood for my first beer.
Provisional results for upper house announced, libs sneak in instead of mayne, giving them the upper house as well.
Looks like there is a byelection in the state seat of Melbourne, the liberals look unlikely to field a candidate so will be very interesting to see if labor can hold it without liberal preferences
