Jazzmasters vs Jaguars

Ben  said about 3 years ago  or at  2:03PM on Monday, March 29 2010 in industry

what's the difference really?

who'd win in a fight?

If I had to buy one, which one and why?

different pickups & electronics, different scale lengths.

Jackbratt  said about 3 years ago:

I think the Jazzmaster is the more classy. Jag would win, it would fight dirty.

It all depends - are you starting at your shoes or swimming by the sand?

I like Jaguars' sound.

wiki said:

The Jaguar was based on the Jazzmaster, with the same, ''offset waist'' body and ''floating tremolo'' system. Unlike the Jazzmaster, the Jaguar was fitted with a shorter 24-inch scale, 22-fret neck (the first Fender guitar to have 22 frets) and featured smaller single-coil pickups with notched side plates that improved RF shielding, making the Jaguar less prone to interference than the more popular Stratocaster and Telecaster.

Although the Jaguar and the Jazzmaster shared the same dual-circuit scheme, the Jaguar had a more complex second (lead) circuit consisting of three switches on the lower bout: the first two were on/off switches for the neck and bridge pickups, respectively, the third switch engaged a capacitor that served as a high-pass filter. This switch was often called the ''strangle'' switch among players, due to the fact that when it is switched on, the Jaguar attains a treble-accented tone quality that easily cuts through a full band sound[1]. The rhythm circuit, set into operation when the upper bout switch is flicked upwards, gives the guitar a bassier, neck pickup only sound, with individual volume and tone rollers to preset. Another of the Jaguar's features was a spring-loaded rubber string mute, which was flipped upwards from under the strings by a lever. The mute was designed for guitarists who had to palm mute for extended periods, which was difficult or impossible on the Jaguar's floating bridge without knocking the bridge out of position. This feature proved unpopular as it sent the guitar out of tune when it was used improperly. When properly adjusted, the mute will apply light pressure to heavy-gauge, flatwound strings without sending the guitar out of tune

whats this mean?

jag is the sexiest of all the fenders

hyperfuzz  said about 3 years ago:

Jazzmaster is the correct choice. Jaguar is a flavour guitar. It is a tasty flavour though.

Ben  said about 3 years ago:

pleae explain hyperfuzz why the jazzmaster is the correct choice?

JunkiePhil  said about 3 years ago:

Play them both, see which one you like more.
If i'd've listened to what people told me about my Gretsch, I'd not have my fave guitar ever right now.

rigid  said about 3 years ago:

sounds like you'd get a jaguar and put a jazzmaster pickups and neck on it.

columbo  said about 3 years ago:

both great - they do very different things tho. i prefer the jazz - more usable sonics for me. jag has tons of (frustrating?) switching options and in the end i only like the sound of the neck pickup.

that's a great idea!

Nah.. you get a jazzmaster and stick two tele deluxe pickups in it.

WIN!

columbo  said about 3 years ago:

after unloading for a gig i accidentally left my beloved jazzmaster in the alley at the side of the Lansdowne the other night. it would've been there 10-15mins before I realised. nobody nicked it which is nice :)

I like the way you think. Jump on the aeroplane, 'free' drink n food, get the guitar, come back home all within a couple of days.

outoftheaircrash  said about 10 months ago:

I think that's rather expensive for that Jazz at Fretted. Sure, it's a good year.. But it's in terrible condition with that headstock repair and the back missing all the paint.

I'd say around $5-6k would be more realistic. And the vintage market is doing terribly at the moment.

There's a '52 Gibson J45 at 555 at the moment for $4000. Like, the same price as what they're worth new. Jesus fucking Christ.

mule  said about 10 months ago:

you would be foolish to buy a new gibson for retail price, no new gibson i have played seems worth that price tag.

outoftheaircrash  said about 10 months ago:

I agree.

Thinking of buying a Jazz but have only got around about $1000...any advice on the MIJ 90's reissues?

nicko_mcbrain  said about 10 months ago:

Jazzy.

Why?

P90s are tuff, and shortscales are fuckin' weak as piss. Harden up.

Kinda true, but you've gotta find the right one - this is made difficult in Australia because they seem to send all the dogs here. It's sad because Gibsons are fuckin' awesome. I have a great '02 Les Paul Standard which is a solid and awesome guitar, which also weighs a TON. Some Gibsons I have played in shops here are seriously a joke. My $200 Yamaha Pacifica is a million times better than a lot of them (don't get me started on my pals Gretsch Black Falcon...ugh). I also have a '62 VOS SG which is fuckin' awesome. I got lucky I think. I dunno, sadly with Gibson you DO need to pay big bucks for the decent models - it seems their Studio models are actually just kinda shithouse.

Yeh cunt/karrrnt.

You should be able to pick one up from Japan via ebay for under that. Doesn't look like there's many up at the moment, but if you keep an eye open you should be able to get one for around $700-800 +$150 or so for postage.

here's one, I can't tell if it's actually 90s MIJ or CIJ though

I sold my 2000 american vintage reissue jazzmaster for $900 last week. bad timing!

Can any experts give me some thoughts on this? Good price? Anyone got a 90s MIJ jazz?

outoftheaircrash  said about 10 months ago:

Fuckin bargain..

If you don't care about having the thick Japanese poly finish, then this would be a great guitar.

I'm tempted myself..

columbo  said about 10 months ago:

that's a great deal Morgan888 - i have a '95 jazzmaster from japan and i think it's one of the best guitars ever. grab this & then an extra hundred or two on new pickups & you'll be laughing.

dub3000  said about 10 months ago:

I have a 95 MIJ Jazzmaster as well, it kicks ass (if a bit trebly - I ended up just gaffer taping the tone knob to ''7'').
