Good new Sydney bands?

goldfoot  said about 2 years ago  or at  2:39PM on Thursday, November 11 2010 in music

Has anyone seen any good new Sydney bands recently?

By new I mean bands that have started up in the last 12 months.

By good I mean not crap.

HAHA. They're premier.

Oh no Voxy!

What are you doing Clyde?

I'm going to get on the email and ask if they'll consider a collaboration with my new band Gangajangalangal. We do covers of Gangajang songs in Thai.

Bangshangalangangajangalangal. Catchy!

But serious business, I'm a big fan of the Dark Bells who may have been around a little longer than a year, but new-ish to me, anyway.

VoxFuzz  said about 2 years ago:

It's funny, innit.

goldfoot  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah, I've seen Dark Bells a couple of times TR. They're getting better and better.

Don't mind the sound of The Atom Bombs. Going to see them this weekend. 60's style surf rock.

Playing our NYE party/show!

Other good/newish Sydney stuff I've seen in the last year includes Spookyland

goldfoot  said about 2 years ago:

MrMusic was right. I saw The Atom Bombs on the weekend. They're a lot of fun.

I also saw a great two piece dirty blues/beefheart type band called Spirit Level last night. They've only played three shows and all I could find on the web about them is [this Faster Louder review] (http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/reviews/events/25460/Hell-City-Glamours-Sando-Sydney-100910) of their show supporting HCG that describes them as the Best.Band.Ever. Hyperbole? Yes, but they are definitely worth checking out.

Mrmusic  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah, I dug the gig yesterday. One of the best house parties I've been to in a long time.
Will have to check out Spirit Level too, when I get a chance.

I really like Snakeface at the moment. I think they're from Sydney. I can't be sure though. Definitely OZ.

Great guys!

goldfoot  said about 1 year ago:

There seems to be a bit of a bluegrass revival happening in Sydney at the moment. As well as Bellyache Ben there are The Green Mohair Suits, Oh Willy Dear (Maladies side project) and The Rusty Spring Syncopators. All of them are worth checking out.

A band called Family were supporting Jamie Hutchings last week. They played pre-Thirteen Tales Dandy Warhols-esque stuff and it was super enjoyable. Anyone know who they are / more info / myspace with songs?

chrowens  said about 10 months ago:

Yeah I saw Family as a support as well and thought they were cool, the only thing I can find on them is this demo on the sampler for Snow Big Deal , which is a serious contender for lineup of the year.

electricsound  said about 10 months ago:

they're doing a show with day ravies on 17/7

checkers  said about 10 months ago:

Nice, and I found them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/familyaus

Some of you guys might like Luchi...they've been getting a bit of FBi attention lately.

Their bandcamp has a bunch of old tunes which kinda sound like the postal service with future beats and more intricate guitar. Some of the newer stuff reminds me of Cowboy Junkies. Will be interesting to watch/hear how they develop.

The Wednesday Night Music Club.

These guys were supporting Melodie Nelson last night and do this great dreamy surfy 70sey poppy thing. Very similar vibe to Melodie Nelson, but more dancey/uptempo.

Eating Flowers played their second show ever last Friday supporting The Laurels, and RULED! 2 guitars and viola, imagine a lo-fi drummerless mash up of Bardo Pond and Galaxie 500 with The Pastels or something. Loud folky drone might be an appropriate descriptor? Bridezilla fans may note that this is Millie's new band. So good!

Reviving this thread with a totally unbiased post - Bowl Cut

huwzey  said 8 days ago:

bowl cut rules so fucking hard, in a non weird way i'm waiting for that fucker to turn 18 so we can play some shows together

degenerate  said 8 days ago:

Bowl Cut absolutely owns it. I'm so over forced low fi that it's not funny, but with bands like Bowl Cut or Housewives or Disco Pansy it feels genuine
