NGL012: LOW LIFE 'Sydney Darbs' 7''
Debut 7'' from Sydney's Low Life, following a self titled cassette tape that manged to joins the dots from No Trend to Box of Fish, and turn the heads of several punters. Bassist Finn Parker was living in Brisbane at the time of release, bringing an armful of tapes w/ him, and indicated a 7'' was to follow. Shortly after he returned to Sydney I said I'd do the seven if they met w/ the stipulation that it be titled ''Sydney Darbs'' (a reference to chicken fried suburbia), the band agreed, and a record was born. Here Low Life take on a more direct approach to punk than the cassette's brooding, bad vibes, recalling the early Aberrant bands and other antipodean purveyors of distress & distaste. You might even hear traces of Cosmic Psychos, if filtered through the brainplay of the Missing Foundation. Great lyrics by Mitch Tolman punctuate the tunes w/ a sense of personality missing in many of their contemporaries. Artwork by Sean Bailey (Lakes, Tax) and mastered for vinyl by Steven Smith.

NGL019: DEGREASER 'Bottom Feeder' LP
I was late to arrive on the alternating Sea Scouts and Bird Blobs trams, but was well aware that many peers and elders held those groups in high esteem. While the DeGreaser record may contain whiffs of the fog the Scouts/Blobs left in their wake, this is a beast in and of itself; enlivened by splashes of chrome strippin' black-hole psych and dense No Wave. You might hear bits & pieces from principal songwriter Tim Evan's other bands over the years, among them Bogan Dust and more recently, Coconuts. Facts bein' facts though, you could just as well do w/out hearing any of what's come before from Tim & co and still get a kick out of DeGreaser and their debut long-player 'Bottom Feeder'. Here are nine tracks that will make you hit the wall or nosedive onto gravel. A pitch-perfect addition to our ever growing roster of gnarled eerie sounds; DeGreaser are a destruction unit of the highest caliber, worth yer chump change no matter what time you happened to tune in. Mastered by Steven Smith.

NGL020: THE LOST DOMAIN 'Blondes Chew More Gum' 2xLP
NGL's 20th release is one we could hardly be more humbled by. Originally recorded in 1995 and seeing vinyl here for the first time- as it were always intended- 'Blondes...' is arguably the Lost Domain's first masterpiece and surely represents the group's creative zenith. The record might appeal to fans of Jandek or the People With Chairs Up their Noses, not specifically in sound, but in the skewered approach and unhinged intent. Three drummers forge a tribal, ''free'' landscape, grounded by Simon Ellaby's (AKA Ragtime Frank) vocals and the virtuous guitar work of Papa Lord God & spiritual group leader Dave MacKinnon. What results is one of the finest rock'n'roll records ever cut in Brisbane, Australia, and we are honored to be a part of Dave and the Lost Domain's redemption. 2 LP's housed in deluxe full color gatefold sleeve. Mastered by Matt Earle (XNoBBQX, Breakdance the Dawn, Meat Thump).

Seeing as it was recorded under the Invisible Empire moniker I take issue with this comment.
Still, they are Australia's second best band and I look forward to hearing it.
Can't wait to hear the Degreaser LP.
Hellza: Since the band asked that the record be releases under the name The Lost Domain, I think the comment remains valid in that context. I do see your point, though. Next, though, we have a reissue of the band/bands first LP 'An Unnatural Act', which does contradict another aspect of my statement. It, too, is a masterpiece.
Copies available at Repressed in Sydney, and Wolly Bully & Collector's Corner/Missing Link in Melbourne. All direct orders come w/ free zine & label compilation CD featuring tracks by Low Life, Watery Love, Circle Pit, The Lost Domain, Obnox, Tax, Mad Nanna, Whores and more!

the degreaser and lost domain records are essential people! (probably shoulda grabbed low life too..)
Haha, indeed it does :]
I still have to buy Blondes Chew More Gum, but An Unnatural Act is a fucking lovely album I've been pushing onto people for years. That first track 'Sun House II' blew my 18 year old head off many years ago.
The Blondes Chew More Gum 2LP is amazing!! Can't believe it stay unissued on vinyl for so long. I feel like it could have been one of the great Siltbreeze double LPs alongside Harsh 70's Reality or Market Square or something... Anyway it's great.
Didn't really enjoy this one so much, will give it another go, but I really like White Man At The Door, their blues album??
And what is Australia's best band?
