Singhala Music Presents
BIG FREEDIA & The Divas (USA) - Australian Tour 2011

Big Freedia (pronounced “Free-da”) is the undisputed “Queen Diva” of Bounce music. Bounce music rose out of the cultural hot pot of New Orleans street parties and is recognisable by its big booming dance rhythms and it's engaging call-and-response lyrics.

Big Freedia is at the forefront of a subgenre of Bounce, reserved for self proclaimed “Sissies”. That's a locally used term to describe sexually ambiguous and cross dressing club artists.

Sissy Bounce has risen to prominence in New Orleans and the incredibly popular Freedia performs 6 out 7 days of the week.

For the first time ever Australian audiences are invited to bounce with Freedia.

LECTURE & WORKSHOP

w. Big Freedia & Altercation
4:30pm Free Entry
9/12 Melbourne Uni - Student Union Queer Department

The lecture/workshop involves ''Big Freedia'' and ''Altercation'', one of Freedia's dancers (and a dance instructor herself) as Cultural Ambassador and Translator.

Lecture on the significance of Bounce Music relating to identity of all types (class, race, gender, sexuality). All participants will expound on these topics with personal theories of identity, inclusion, musical cultural development, cultural reciprocation, the inter-relatedness of movement and consciousness, the history of this sacred dance and it's place in the New Orleans canon, and how exercising personal space can inform many aspects of our lives and identity. Freedia and Altercation would then be available for a Q&A.

ALTERCATION'S BOUNCE CLASS: THE ABC'S OF P-POPPIN'

At doors at 7:00pm
7/12 Toff in Town - free dance class - 7pm

In this dance class, participants will do three to four stretching sessions during which discussions about the body movements are explained and people are encouraged to discuss such topics as feminine sexual empowerment, cultural-reciprocation, the implications of the Bounce 'beat' and how it affects individuals personally. The students are then shown about five different basic movements/positions. The instructor, Altercation, will be moving amongst the class encouraging and correcting. Students are also paired off to learn how to promote movement by clapping and verbal encouragement, and by switching roles. People of ALL genders and all identities are encouraged to participate in the class. The 'pussy' is the focus of the movement, though those without a physical one will be put in touch with their own etheric 'pussy'. And it's a lot of FUN!

Big Freedia, the undisputed Queen Diva of New Orleans 'sissy bounce', returns to Australia this October for a week of sweaty, ferocious ass shaking. Having already been announced in this years Melbourne Festival lineup, Singhala Music are excited to announce club shows in Sydney and Melbourne.

With hits such as 'Azz Everywhere' and 'Excuse', towering transgender MC Big Freedia and her powerhouse dance posse, The Divas will teach and command you to bounce to their frenetic booty beats. For those of you who were lucky enough to see her perform last year at Meredith festival or at one of the side shows, you can surely attest to the reputation the live show has as one of the most energetic, crowd involved live shows ever. Big Freedia has been responsible for the uncontrollable urge of thousands of people world wide to shake their asses like nobody is watching.

NPR Music called 'Azz Everywhere' ''A fresh tip of the hat to African-American call-and-response traditions that also provides the New Orleans bounce scene with an addictive dance floor anthem'' and named it one of their favourite songs of 2011. While MTV Iggy named her live show #1 on their must see bands at CMJ festival preempting ''people will be pushing and shoving to hear her perform her hit 'Azz Everywhere' and we're betting her set will have the highest fun quotient of the festival''

Bounce music is an original urban music rising up from the intimate and fun-loving nature of the New Orleans housing projects which dominate the city's street culture. Big Freedia has become an ambassador for 'sissy bounce'. Having featured in Treme, HBO's series about the aftermath of hurricane Katrina and Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel, Big Freedia and Her Divas now bring part of the New Orleans vibrant culture to Australian clubs.

Start warming up your cheeks, Australia.

Can we remind you what BIG FREEDIA's last tour was like??

Carbie has photos and videos of the Tote show up, might be the cause of some consternation to the dancers involved since no he won't take them down. I can't comment on his Facebook page for some reason?
