What's So Good About Northcote & Brunswick?

Manouche  said about 1 year ago  or at  9:27PM on Monday, February 20 2012 in chat

Hipsters always go on about the virtues of these suburbs but I've found myself walking up and down High Street Northcote and Sydney Road Brunswick feeling like I'm in some kind of hell. Boring, ugly, scrappy roads with no discernible character.

Manouche  said about 1 year ago:

Thank you for the suggestions.

rigid  said about 1 year ago:

The best thing about them is that you can sit in the tram and keep a healthy distance from the rabble as you make your way to Preston.

JRB  said about 1 year ago:

It's great there. The air is clean, the water's clean, even the dirt, it's clean. Bowling averages are way up, mini-golf scores are way down. And we have more excellent water slides than any other suburbs we communicate with. I'm telling you these places great!

kelele  said about 1 year ago:

Syd rd truly is a shit place. But go closer to Brunswick East, much better there.

anonymous  said about 1 year ago:

This place is great. Try the Rice flour crepes topped with duck, prosciutto & radicchio, finished with pomegranate kernels...it's the best.

woolfat  said about 1 year ago:

Christ that sounds tasty.

Actionralf  said about 1 year ago:

Yeah, everything at the Penny Farthing is delicious. Some of the best coffee I have ever had as well...they roast their own beans.

(Note: I am quite good friends with the owners, but this does not effect how delicious everything is)

woolfat  said about 1 year ago:

my Their coffee is great but I've always found the good a bit blah. By the sounds of it, I think I've just been choosing the wrong things...

Coz - I know it wasn't directed at me - I'm cool with that. I'm trying to tear you a new one or anything - what you typed was just a little bit confusing. I think I largely agree with you about Funswick BTW.

Coz  said about 10 months ago:

Nah, you're cool wit' me tramdriver :) Fair enough if you were confused. But I thought everybody referred to any place on their route as ''their tram stop'' when they're using it?

poprocks96  said about 10 months ago:

How can you be bothered typing all that?

Coz  said about 10 months ago:

Catching up for lost time pops!

Tramdriver  said about 10 months ago:

Coz - Yeah I think we do; it is perhaps the context of the thread that got us confused.

poprocks - Snap!

Coz said 9 days ago:
Also, as for this:
(though 'bogan accents'? Don't think so)
Just because you can't discern something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I grew up in the one suburb for my whole life, born to a mother whose family has lived in country Victoria for generations and a father who lived in Mildura since he was two. Yet ever since I was a kid I've been asked where my accent is from - it's described as some as ''posh'', but mostly it's described as English or Canadian.
If other people can discern an accent on me when I was born and raised in the Melbourne suburbs, does it not also make sense that I may be able to discern an accent in them? Since it seems a widely thought that we do, in fact, speak differently.

I have never heard a linguist, nor a linguist specialising in Australian linguistics, nor have I ever in the time I spent studying linguistics, come across the 'bogan accent' as in anyway a codified, analysable distinction. If you are sure you can hear something no one else can, perhaps you will have a very successful career as a linguist waiting for you? Or at least one with a massive break through. I doubt it though.

Also, if large amounts of people can say you have an accent which is obviously a glaringly wrong if not stupid assumption, perhaps you have made an incorrect inference as well?

Morris Iemma  said about 10 months ago:

Also, where are all the single people that you said populate this place? It seems to be comprised of annoying couples hanging off each other and who make miserable single people like me walk to the side of the path when they are lovingly passing by in their perfect, loving, coupled way, on their way home to give each other hours of oral pleasure after hours of aural inanity.

And there are people with babies all the time as well! Why do people who have children all of a sudden think they are important and the central focus of the universe? What the fuck is so special about pumping out another hungry, all-consuming mouth to suck life away from people not fortunate enough to be born in a rich, developed country and who will, given 5-10 years, simply be a unfulfilled, depressed, confused, pain-stricken faced with the gloomy prospect of facing another 50 years of misery before they recline into nothingness? You selfish arseholes should think of others before you fart out another overgrown sperm.

outoftheaircrash  said about 10 months ago:

Good grief.

outoftheaircrash  said about 10 months ago:

Also- anyone else come across the perception that Northcote is full of lesbians? I don't think i've ever found that; despite hearing it so many times.

ocelotl  said about 10 months ago:

outoftheaircrash, I think it's Thornbury.
Morris, feel better now?

frigid star  said about 10 months ago:

Westgarth is lesbian city still, though I like to think they all actually live in Dennis and walk there.

Morris Iemma  said about 10 months ago:

I love lesbians. Especially if they don't adopt. If only Northcote were full of lesbians. Not that 'lipstick' lesbian shit either, raging, bulldyke lesbians.

Ocelotl - are you one of these couples?

fzchk  said about 10 months ago:

Thornbury is still the domain of the old Mediterranean couples who steal fruit from each others' trees...and mine.

ocelotl  said about 10 months ago:

Morris - I am not.

S/W  said about 10 months ago:

i live in thornbury and have a finely tuned gaydar... i can confirm that northcote/thornbury is indeed full of homosexual women.

happy to answer further questions on the matter.

black wasp!  said about 10 months ago:

Do they like your music?

S/W  said about 10 months ago:

i'll take a poll and get right back to you.

Bowie  said about 10 months ago:

I met a older neo lesbian the other day. She was hot. And she had her own house in northcote.

Morris Iemma  said about 10 months ago:

Lesbian couples are good though, it's heterosexual couples that piss me off.

jerkstore  said about 7 months ago:

Has Coz's account been hacked or are her posts always that convoluted & ridiculous?

@ everything Morris Iemma wrote - Yes! Keep on keeping on!
