at dirt cheap (swanston st, melbourne) for $10 on DVD with interviews with the lead actress and the director.
top buy!

''youse chicks can come to the Pizza Hut if you want; but we're not paying for ya.''
script from my younger years rather than from Puberty Blues
YOU SLACKARSE MOLL.
Watched this last night, in mixed company, including an American who didn't quite get why us Australians of a certain age were so into it.
drags on a Winnie blue, bangs up some smack
You don't have to be of a certain age surely!
The girls from Girlfriend were all from Cronulla. Well, 4/5
Oh, I think being old enough to remember 1975 helps with this movie.
Bruce Beresford, eh?
Puberty Blues
M
Bruce Beresford, 87 mins, Australia, 1981, 35mm.
Set around the beaches of Cronulla, Bruce Beresford's coming-of-age drama is essentially an 'ocker' movie for girls.
Based on Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Carey's semi-autobiographical novel, Puberty Blues taps into a very Australian obsession and identification with beach and surf culture.
Aside from the iconic surf scenes along Sydney's southern beaches, the film introduces audiences to the distinct surfie lingo, and takes on a more critical aspect when, for the girls, the 'glassy walls' become a kind of 'glass ceiling'.
There's some classic dialogue throughout and even more classic performances, but ultimately it's the truth of the world around the characters that has allowed the film to maintain its strength and power.
For anyone that has spent a lot of time at the beach you can't help but chuckle at the references to Chiko Rolls and towel-minding, but for these two girls, their small victories are major triumphs.

''I don't have to wary about that. I did it with my cousin at the beach''
Deb: '' I wish I had a cousin like that''
Classic
Great show
This
Bloody good fun. Not enough parental units in that ep though.
For some reason I just feel incredibly sad at the end of that ep. Poor Frieda. Shit.
Yeah me too. Felt super sorry for poor Frieda in the movie as well.
also must point out that I was disappointed that Bruce was not wearing leopard print grundies (like he did in the movie)
Or ambervision sunnies too come to think of it...
what does 'titted me off' mean?
I think it means getting to first base. Or maybe second base. Something besides pashing.
Was saying to my lady that I thought it may have been dumbed down a bit because it's on 10 but they're doing a great job of it. Deb's little brother makes me lol.
I love the movie and watched the first episode expecting to hate it but its great. My puberty blues drinking game involves taking a swig whenever they say root or moll. Agree with Debs little brother, he looks like an old man in a 10 year olds body. Dan Wyllie must've borrowed Eric Bana's Chopper prop.
Dan's willy.
it's about the only thing going well for ch 10 at the moment, isn't it?
and even then, slipped from previous weeks last night.
in case anyone was wondering what i was like as a kid.. i was that younger brother.
Strike a light woman. Great line. I wonder if Vaseline are getting any marketing ideas from this.
It's bloody funny. Thoroughly enjoying it and the girl who plays Debbie reminds me heaps of Rose Byrne in Echo Point - she lights up the screen.
From a decade ago - transcript from Australian Story {Broadcast 30-SEP-2002}
Really great Australian Story on tonight about the girls from the movie.
fucking love this show!
Except for the extremely awkward surfing part and post-surfing coversation at the end.
Yeah, the planned conversations were a little awkward.
