hey guys

say u had a grand or 2 to spend on studio gear

what would u buy????

i am thinking m box mini or something but dont know what else

thoughts?

mipearson  said about 6 years ago:

I'd pirate a copy of Cubase SX, buy one of those Behringer firewire interfaces, and spend a grand on a pair of monitors and treating the room.

'course, it depends on what you're recording, really.

adamdmills  said about 6 years ago:

dictaphone.

the power of 666  said about 6 years ago:

What do you want to do? Completely changes your options.

Mo  said about 6 years ago:

well it will be mainly taking sessions recorded elsewhere home

not too much "live" recording

mostly direct sorta thing

Mrmusic  said about 6 years ago:

10 hours at a $50/hour studio, some weed, coke and wizz.

Mo  said about 6 years ago:

maybe vox recorded with a mike....

Mo  said about 6 years ago:

yeh but i cant have the studio everyday mm

hillsonghoods  said about 6 years ago:

question - do you already have a decent fast computer at home with a bunch of hard drive space?

the power of 666  said about 6 years ago:

So you'd need Pro Tools then? Won't be recording multiple things at once? Mainly for just demoing & live instruments?

M-Box, a microphone and some decent monitors then. Or some shit monitors & decent headphones.

But MiP's idea was a good one.

Mo  said about 6 years ago:

certainly do hillsong

plus a massive external hard drive too

fastcanoe  said about 6 years ago:

Two track recorder and two fuck off mics.. all one would ever need.

mipearson  said about 6 years ago:

If you're just mixing a copy of Cubase and some decent monitors will do. Headphones won't do the trick.

Protools / Mbox is a ripoff.

If you're trying to record vocals you'll need a Shure SM58, a Behringer BCA202, and a cupboard lined with doonas. That's at an absolute minimum.

Mrmusic  said about 6 years ago:

Don't need it everyday myself.
Just a little digital recorder or minidisk to record doodles and ideas or assess how something is sounding.
Then, when ready, leave the recording to a semi-professional.

But that's just me.

not really recordin multiple things at once.... stereo at most....

i got decent cans... (and headphones too)

scallywag  said about 6 years ago:

the trusty ol tascam 4 track - imagine how many hits have been demoed on these baby's!!

Mo  said about 6 years ago:

oh yeh - and i dont mind tools

i am comfortable with it - hence why i'd go that route....

textchimp  said about 6 years ago:

For a soundcard interface similar to the Mbox one you mentioned, you might want to consider the Tascam US-122 - it should be a bit cheaper, and it has 2 balanced XLR inputs with preamps, as opposed to the single one on the Mbox. It also has LED indicators to show you when your input is clipping, which is handy.

However, if you think you might ever want to record something like drums, you might want to consider a card with more than two inputs....

Mo  said about 6 years ago:

nah - never gonna record drums properly on this setup

for demo-ing - vdrums

and for other things i'd record them elsewhere

does the tascam work with tools?

Talamere  said about 6 years ago:

i'm doing this - i just got an imac and i'm going to get the mbox2 factory and some monitors and mics and stuff. manny's is going to do the pro tools and the monitors pretty cheap. less than 2k. the new computer was the most expensive thing.

red_beard  said about 6 years ago:

if you get an Mbox make sure its an MBOX 2 Pro (firewie)

Tis not a rip off cause most studios in the world dont run cubase. And the mbox is very handy, is way better than relying on yer comps soundcard.

Do yer songs at home then take them into a studio to mix master or do final tracking, most studios use pro tools

I'll look into it.

Those Rokit 8 monitors for $300?

Ethan actively spreads misinformation and pseudo science to promote himself and it absolutely disgust me that people listen to him about anything other than DIY bass traps. Of which he does know some things, but is not a proper acoustician.

It's getting out of hand with this but remember Ethan's papers are endorsed by the AES. Mixerman bases opinion on fact

ok I will take the agree to disagree, but i take some issue with the above point.

Yes Ethan's papers on sound absorption and treatment are endorsed by the AES, however when it comes to making and mixing records he is far from an expert yet views himself/presents himself as such.

Whereas with Sarafin, his track record when it comes to making records speaks for itself.

I also disagree that Sarafin's book is slanted toward - '' there's a bit of unless you get the best quality stuff you won't get the best results'', to me, the book was all about maximising emotional impact of the music you are mixing and the mindset that goes with that. But agree to disagree there.

For more technical stuff, you cant go past Bob Katz: Mastering Audio, Bobby Owinksy: Mixing engineer's handbook and Recording engineer's handbook

MUHAHAHAH

Also - offered Rokit 8's for $300? Get get get??

good price, i find them hard to work with in terms of mid detail

with home setups, a lot of it is about knowing how your monitors translate to 'real world'

King_Rat  said about 1 month ago:

I am the real world Mo. I make the rules.

I mean I have some old monitors which will work but I'd actually prefer to hook them up to the house stereo.

HOOWAH MONEY MONEY

just buy a tape recorder mate

gripes  said about 1 month ago:

Any suggestions on mastering software? Nothin too flashy: bit of compression, limiting, EQ etc.

Gordon  said about 1 month ago:

For basic a standard DAW.

Otherwise T-Racks or Ozone. Ozone is 159 US if you create an Audiodeluxe.com account.

King_Rat  said 14 days ago:

Friends, enemies and lovers.

I have almost done it. I have ALMOST made it.

I need advice on the last step. I need an interface which will support the ADAT8000

Any suggestions?

Other than that I have acquired
Rockit 8's
Drum mic set
Rode NTK condensor
All stands, leads, drum clips
Headphone Amp
ADAT8000
DI's

So I need an interface and we're off.

Also would you suggest valve preamps for extra channels into the interface?

xo

Mr Police  said 14 days ago:

Only if that's the sound you're going for.

King_Rat  said 14 days ago:

Mr Police can you run me through the different types of pre amps and their intended purpose for particular sounds?

Gordon  said 14 days ago:

I can send you a profire 2626 for $375 including postage. Only home use, been in a rack since nam and works perfectly. I've just upgraded. However, there's one on eBay for $350, zero bids in Melbourne if that's where you're located.

King_Rat  said 14 days ago:

Where are you located?

Gordon  said 14 days ago:

Perth

King_Rat  said 14 days ago:

I'll let you know but I am pretttttty keen. Just going to do some internetting and all that bullshit first hey.

Gordon  said 14 days ago:

And if you want a half decent hardware comp I'll chuck in a FMR Real Nice Compressor for $125.

black wasp!  said 14 days ago:

Get that!

King_Rat  said 14 days ago:

Doing it PM style bro.
