The Cult Inks With Roadrunner

The Cult
May 29, 2007, 11:00 AM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Veteran British rock act the Cult has signed with Roadrunner, Billboard.com can reveal. The group's first new album since 2001's Atlantic set "Beyond Good and Evil" will be released Sept. 25 in conjunction with its own New Wilderness imprint. The as-yet-untitled set is being recorded in London with producer Youth.

Beginning June 5, the Cult, which now includes lone founding members vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, will be on the road in Europe supporting the Who. North American dates are being booked for the fall.

Following the release of "Beyond Good and Evil," which Astbury previously told Billboard.com was a "soul destroying" experience, the Cult was inactive for three-and-a-half years before reuniting to tour in the spring of 2006.

As previously reported, Astbury guests on "Burn My Shadow," the first single from the upcoming UNKLE album, "War Stories."

Mo  said about 5 years ago:

what spurred the change wham guy?

TheOtherGuyFromWham  said about 5 years ago:

That album in 2001. I pricked my ears up at that and as a young 19 year old who had just arrived in London thinking "Oooh, gigs to go to!" I saw The Cult were playing for £15, grabbed myself a ticket, head on down a couple of weeks later and was hooked.

Fucking great live show.

Matt Sorum was on drums for that show too.

i got into these guys bigtime when i was in year 10...1989. (man, was it that long ago?).

she sells sanctuary's a col song.

electric was awesome. firewoman.

the lyrics, of course, are utter crap. as are the videos. but still..

this new wave of 'rock' bands don't come close to how good The Cult were on electric

C'mooooooooooon, little honeeyyyyy!

Silence in the court, McBain. Your testimony is not required in this matter.

TheOtherGuyFromWham  said about 5 years ago:

From their Wiki: There has also been interest in getting the band to appear again at the "Big Day Out" festival in Australia.

Yes I am aware that is about as reliable as worksafe_hiponion saying it on a thread here.

nicko_mcbrain  said about 5 years ago:

hey, Judge - i sentence you to suck a fart outta my arse.

__v  said about 5 years ago:

the bit where the bass player swings around on his heel and starts playing at the beginning of the video for LOVE REMOVAL MACHINE

it's POSETASTIC

nicko_mcbrain  said about 5 years ago:

billy duffy is a screaming lord guitar player, too - so tasteful.

TheJudge  said about 5 years ago:

You're in contempt there, Reuben...

nicko_mcbrain  said about 5 years ago:

Haha...thats pretty funny. The more I think back on the gig I witnessed the more amusement I get from it. It was enjoyable on some level but there was a lot of ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS??? moments.

happydays  said about 3 years ago:

yeah... it all ended with everyone walking off after Love Removal... except billy who thanked the crowd and said ''good night...or was it?''

ouch

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

Hahaha....they crack me up. Hopefully they had a better sound than they did at Luna Park. I felt bad for Billy. HE was so frustrated there.

miss katie  said about 3 years ago:

Apparently Duffy is quite the tosser in the flesh. Ian is supposed to be more human.

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

I reckon they are all tossers tbh.

miss katie  said about 3 years ago:

hehe

Urquhart Bluff  said about 3 years ago:

I thought they were excellent on Saturday night at the Palais. Though Ian was bitching about his mic all night. From where I was sitting right at the back of the theatre it looked like the cable kept getting entwined with Billy's guitar lead. And Billy kept motioning angrily at the monitors guy about something.

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

Poor Duncan....

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

According to the guy who started this thread, Astbury is a total wanker, and Billy Duffy is okay. This tends to back up everything I've heard elsewhere.

VelvetDogge  said about 3 years ago:

a fun time. bring back whammy bars.

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

OK....

LaxCharisma  said about 3 years ago:

You probably meant this whammy bar though...

man, that was a tough 90 mins

what a shame

but it did have the all time world-beater cosmically inane bit of stage banter:

''i been reading a lot of blogs lately that are telling me i put on some weight - i'm 47 man - but i'm telling ya now that i'm gonna get my old body back - i got a little aerobic exercise bike at home and i've been riding that - actually i had some hip surgery last year, it really fucked me up - okay thanks for listening. this one's for michael hutchence.''

columbo  said about 2 years ago:

awesome!

turkey_sandwich  said about 10 months ago:

anyone given the new record a spin yet?

LaxCharisma  said about 10 months ago:

No

monkeyman  said about 10 months ago:

Aimee Nash from Black Ryder/Morning After Girls recently married Ian Astbury.

Kez  said about 10 months ago:

New album is ok for a couple of spins. I'd rather listen to that than the Pumpkins one.
