Royal Headache, Meet Pitchfork

“Do you know Pitchfork?” This was Royal Headache drummer Shortty’s innocent query after learning that a certain Ryan Schreiber was interested in his band.

The Pitchfork founder had emailed the Sydney four-piece requesting an MP3 of ‘Eloise’ after hearing the track on local blog Rose Quartz. The track – a song about a girl that the band hastily recorded on a Dictaphone in a Putney boatshed recorded by the Straight Arrows' Owen Penglis on 1/4" tape – is now streaming on the site’s influential Forkcast. It will appear on the band’s debut 7” which will be out on R.I.P Society Records in late September.

Royal Headache will perform at the Sydney leg of the Flip Out Festival on August 29.

UPDATE: Royal Headache will now headline the Melbourne leg of Flip Out at The Corner Hotel on September 5.

yeah, it looks like the buzzcocks

nic.rulz  said about 3 years ago:

Royal Headache are 4 piece. Also everyone's got it wrong, Eloise was actually recorded by Owen of Straight Arrows. It sounds great, recorded to 1/4 inch tape. Girls was recorded on a dictaphone.

who said they were a 3 piece nic.rulz?

nic.rulz  said about 3 years ago:

It was a typo, been fixed.

I think this article needs to be sent back for further subbing. I like that sentence that has been ruled out. Also RECORDED not RECORED

shaun  said about 3 years ago:

Is that a joke?

StopSookingWimps  said about 3 years ago:

because of the pitchfork thing?

josejones  said about 3 years ago:

From the release: ''After being invited to play the Sydney leg of Flip Out on the strength of a handful of gigs including a record store and a warehouse, Royal Headache made a recent journey down to Melbourne and slayed everyone that bore witness to their hi octane power pop. A decision was made on the spot after their first Melbourne show to ask Royal Headache to headline the Melbourne Flip Out Festival, the band took a couple of days to decide if they wanted to do this (!) and luckily for Melbourne - they are gonna close this glorious day of Live Music, Record Fair, Merch Market, Disco Party Room, BBQ with Vegan options and more!''

I'm assuming it was a joke..

it's not a joke. it's news. news is never a joke.

from the same press release:

So Royal Headache don't even have a release! It doesn't matter. Get down the front to hear their song 'Girls' and it will all make sense. Yesterday it made sense to the founder of Pitchfork who heard their tracks streaming on fantastic local blog Rose Quartz and they are now featured on their influential Forkcast!

eastside  said about 3 years ago:

Melbourne's going to be all over Royal Headache like a rash. Watch out.... it's just like when the White Stripes came through in 2000, The Datsuns took off in 2001 and Jet-created craziness in 2002. Can't think of anyone who got big in 2003. 2004 it was Wolfmother, 2005 hmmm, 2006 double hmmmm, 2007 Eddy Current.... there hasn't been a NBT for a while now.

Bugsy.  said about 3 years ago:

so theyre headlining melb flip out now? exciting!

eastside  said about 3 years ago:

See.. Bugsy's all over it!

memphis  said about 3 years ago:

goddamnit, i thought mahnut was headlining

eastside  said about 3 years ago:

I forgot 2005/06 was Airbourne and last year it was meant to be Tame Impala but no one seemed to get either flustered or bothered about them

btw I reckon Royal Headache write catchy songs, put on a great show, seem like nice guys and have a great name - give 'em the first on slot on the Saturday at MMF.

after seeing them today, i'm believing the hype.

StainedCircles  said about 3 years ago:

It's not hype, it's real. There is no way we'd have asked an almost unheard of band to headline Melbourne Flip Out if they weren't the greatest thing we had seen forever.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 3 years ago:

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys live. I wonder how it translates live, considering that a large part of their charm is due to the lo-fi nature of their recording techniques.

cleanyoungmess  said about 3 years ago:

These guys are awesome! Probably go as far as saying most interesting band in Sydney I've heard this year. (but then that's not really saying much.)

Oh, that's not saying much, is it?

i think you'll dig it.

cleanyoungmess  said about 3 years ago:

Sorry Shaun! With the exception of Philadelphia Grand Jury - who are completely infectious, not a lot out of Sydney has moved me this year. Anything i've seen up there or heard lately is a little bit 'meh'. If I'm looking in the wrong places by all means please enlighten me.

I gather our tastes aren't very compatible, especially if you like PGJ.

Tell us more eastside, i've never heard about this!

runoutgroove  said about 3 years ago:

others probably know more details but white stripes toured and played a bunch of shows in melbourne. i can't remember much other than the stuff in augogo mailouts at the time. i think there was a tour 7'' as well?

also, i'm sorry i missed these shows.
