Forthcoming: Sophie Hutchings
News posted Tuesday, August 10 2010 at 02:00 PM.
Related: Sophie Hutchings.

What: Becalmed by Sophie Hutchings.
When: August 14 through Sydney indie Preservation.
Key notes: Debut album from Sydney-based pianist Hutchings. Produced in two settings: with engineer Tim Whitten (The Necks) in Sydney and Tony Dupé (aka fellow Preservation artist Saddleback) in a home studio in Kangaroo Valley, NSW. Performers on the album include Hutchings’ brother Jamie, leader of longstanding Sydney outfit Bluebottle Kiss; and cellist Sophie Glasson, who has recorded with Sarah Blasko and The Church.
From the presser: “Sophie’s compositions move from disarmingly spare and elegant beginnings to curl out with a tingling edge, propelling its austerity into urgent and epic realms … The inspired measure of Becalmed is found in the space it inhabits between the meditative and evocative.”

Looking forward to this, I have only heard her work on BBK/Jamie Hutchings stuff so far.
It's ultra-lovely.
So is there vocals?
all instrumental. agree with raven. it's uber lovely.
Oh really? Bit of a shame, she has a beautiful, delicate voice, though she is no slouch behind the keys.
I also like this a lot.
...and from memory there may also be a forthcoming record with vocals?
Track one - Seventeen.
Scullin!
she wrote track one when she was 17. Fact.
Correct. I believe this will be the Golden Books thing (link is also Sophie's MySpazz), but they're for the future.
This album is wonderful.
Ticket sales are already pretty good for the upcoming launch so don't leave it to the last minute to book your spot...
Sophie Hutchings (launching Becalmed), Seaworthy & Matt Rösner (launching Two Lakes) + Tired Hands at Raval Thursday 28 October. Tickets
That's what they bloody told me about Bam! Then I went and got a bloody ticket and the thing got fucking cancelled. I feel sick.
melbourne launch, runoutgroove?
nothing for sophie that I know of. I'm down playing with grouper on 1 october.
this record really is great. Has been getting me through a few long work days.
There are only a few tickets left for Sophie's launch at Raval in Sydney this Thursday night, but there's now a second show on Friday night at Raval with big brother Jamie Hutchings doing a full set as well. Tickets on sale here:

Been meaning to pop in to say how much I enjoyed Sophie et al's performance last Friday night in Canberra. Very special indeed.
Aw fanks lessmore. Was great to play Canberra!
Tonight & tomorrow night, Sydney folks!
So, how was the show last night? I'm thinking of going tonight.
go. it's good. and cheap too, innit? plus it's special hutchings family night tonight. something rare. ish.
So I went on Friday. Got there at the advertised time of 7:30, show started at 9, so I went to a friends place near by, got a bit too drunk as I'm a bit shy going to gigs on my own, missed all but one of Jamies songs. Sophie was great, I loved the additional instrumentation, very musical use of the saw, great strings too.
would love to hear a record of just sophie and jamie. confirmed after listening to doubt seeds late last night.
Playing again at Raval on February 18th. Support from, erm, Raven (I'm also playing cello with Soph again) and Tony Gorman of Clarion Fracture Zone. Jamie will be playing in the band.
For the Facebook-inclined.
