Forthcoming: 78 Saab

News posted Friday, September 17 2010 at 11:00 AM.
Related: 78 Saab.

What: Good Fortune by 78 Saab.

When: October 15 through Other Tongues.

Key notes: Fourth album for the enduring Sydney four-piece – singer/guitarist Ben Nash, guitarist Jake Andrews, bassist Garth Tregillgas and drummer Nicholai Danko – who formed in 1995. First on new Sydney imprint Other Tongues after parting ways with Ivy League. Follows 2007’s The Bells Line, which we described as their “most complete record yet”. Recorded with the band’s long-time studio cohort Tim Whitten (Powderfinger, The Go-Betweens, Hoodoo Gurus, Augie March). Features a reworked version of ‘Never Gonna Be’, which was originally written in a Brisbane backpacker hostel in 1997.

From the presser:Good Fortune is full of the dynamics, mood, melody and classic songwriting … Ben Nash’s world-weary lyrics are at their best, whether they’re lamenting the passing of an old friend on ‘Warm Jets’, or admiring the magic and wonder of a child’s world on ‘Small Things’.”

Got hold of this album the other day; another great release by the Saab. Not sure that it's on par with The Bell's Line, but it's a very solid record.

This is one of the first ever bands I saw during a Melbourne holiday in 2000. They had this song called ''Call The Cops'' or something similar to that. It was stuck in my head for a couple of years and when I moved to Melbs in 2002 I asked someone at a record store about them. Having been told they had broken up, I forgot about them. I never did track down that song.

Might be Cops off Crossed Lines. Album's available on iTunes I'm pretty sure.

''calling the cops and security guards...''?
