In Brief: Fabulous Diamonds, Laneway’s ‘Very West’, Pyramid
  • Melbourne's Fabulous Diamonds will play a farewell hometown show at The Tote on September 30 before embarking on a US tour in support of their new album, Fabulous Diamonds II. The duo – Nisa Venerosa and Jarrod Zlatic – will head off to the States in late October for a joint tour with New York “love-rock” duo Pigeons. They’re also playing Chapter Music's official CMJ showcase in New York, alongside Crayon Fields, Chapter boss Guy Blackman and acts from New Jersey label Underwater Peoples (Andrew Cedermark, Air Waves and La Big Vic). Supports for the farewell show from Absolute Boys, Superstar and My Pal Foot Foot's Yuko Kono (Japan). Cost: $10 on the door.

  • Organisers of the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival are on the lookout for unsigned bands from Melbourne’s western suburbs for their “Very West” initiative. Run as part of Laneway’s partnership with the Footscray Community Arts Centre (FCAC), the competition gives one act a year-long professional development program which includes a place on the bill at Melbourne’s Laneway and a mentorship with FCAC. Entrants must be unsigned from the western region of metropolitan Melbourne. Applications close on October 1, 5pm, with a “Battle of the Bands”-style showcase event happening at the FCAC amphitheatre on October 31. For more info click here.

  • The first round of acts have been announced for the Pyramid Rock festival in Phillip Island over the New Year period (December 29-January 1). Joining international headliners N*E*R*D, Built To Spill and Arrested Development are a sizeable contingent of local acts including Little Red, Philadelphia Grand Jury, The John Steel Singers, Hungry Kids of Hungary, Oh Mercy and ’90s heritage acts Jebediah, Tumbleweed and, er, Violent Soho. Following last year’s severe weather conditions, organisers have implemented a new site layout and staging. Tickets and more information here.
