– From the maker of 'Hold On, I'm Coming On' comes 'Gap Year Blues', another lo-fi gem perfectly suited to Dan Kelly’s “retro futuristic ballad that ruminates on the futility of long distance love”. The clip was directed by Johann Rashid aka the guy behind Eddy Current Suppression Ring’s ‘Which Way To Go’ and ‘Rush To Relax’, as well as vids by Super Wild Horses and Jessica Says. Kelly is touring nationally throughout March/April with Gareth Liddiard and appearing at various festivals with Dan Kelly's Dream Band. 'Gap Year Blues' is taken from Kelly’s ARIA-nominated Dan Kelly’s Dream.
– Architecture In Helsinki have a new video out for ‘Contact High’, the latest cut lifted off forthcoming album Moment Bends. Directed by Krozm (Cut Copy, Midnight Juggernauts), the clip features a decidedly Patrick Bateman-esque character and what can only be described as a “glory hole”. According to Krozm's latest blog post, it was "shot in Paris in an apartment that was "something of a shrine to modern living". Moment Bends is out April 8 through the band’s new label Modular Recordings.

Its kind of interesting, here we have 2 indie acts, that are not in it for the money, and are probably not going to be owning a house any time soon, but Kelly really seems to embrace his poorness, his clip looks so cheap ass broke its almost a turn off - do i want to like an artist that cant seem to get any money together.
While AiH are probably almost as broke as Kelly but they have gone for a very money looking clip, the guy looks like he is a really rich wall street type from the 80s.
I wonder if either of these acts got the feel right to make the viewer want to get into these artists?
I think i would take the AiH one over the Kelly one which looks like no effort was made at all, that its almost insulting to think that he would even bother to serve it up to us. it looks like he spent $5 and an hour and a half on it. which if you really feel you mean what you are singing about isnt really good enough. dont go to the pub for a month, save some money, do whatever you have to to at least spend $500 on the clip, or maybe a month making it.
I know its not easy, and that AiH have some sort of Modular deal, but that wouldn't be that big, and if you are gonna make a clip, its forever, try a bit harder.
ya gotta spend money to make money
Dude had to pay for someone to fly to london by the looks, that's your whole budget right there.
i think you're totally underestimating AiH's wealth...
i like dan's clip. i think it suits his aesthetic well.
ya gotta spend money to make money
So true Ben.
This clip might actually make the song worse. no effort at all. if M+N weren't up Kellys arse it would never get shown.
i like dan's clip. i think it suits his aesthetic well.
Well i dont think he has an aesthetic. and if he sticks to this aesthetic he is gonna keep selling less albums every release. you do gotta spend money to make money. simple. unless he really doesn't want to make money. then fare enough, just stay on the dole.
As for AiH, i am not saying their clip is right, they just got the balance a bit better than Kelly. they actually made some effort.
ahem
Yes agreed Jose, that clip should never have been shown either. what a waist of our time.
but besides wasting our time, these artists are helping ruin their songs and and career too, by putting out crap.
I think you're also totally underestimating how much a clip costs to make, samiek - $500 wouldn't even pay for the camera.
I know about making clips.
Kelly wouldnt have spent $500 on his clip.
Sorry, I stand corrected.
I had to stop watching the Dan Kelly clip last night and I refrained from commenting until now. It's horrible. Also looks like he has a dead animal on his head.
you waisted you're opportunity jones
I think the Dan clip is trying to be ironic.
And AiH aren't poor.
I love the Dan Kelly clip. He probably understands that there wasn't much of a point to him spending a heap of money on a song that, whilst great, is never going to take over the world.
Dan Kelly if you dont beleive in it enough to make an effort, why should we care.
Trust me nearly every Australian band is poor, except for about 5 acts.
Which brings me to an another interesting point.
AiH are making them selves look wealthy, I dont think that is the best option either, but it seems a common clip direction. tho better than not trying at all.
Dan Kellys low fi, 80's green screen aesthetic seems to be in fashion now. Personally I hate it also, but if thats they style they chose to go with then more power to them.
different strokes for different folks I guess.
WHAT ABOUT THE DEAD ANIMAL ON HIS HEAD?
Dan Kelly's music might appear charming and cute, but fuck is dull dull dull.
also thanks for mentioning the directors name...this should be done on all clips where possible.
It is
Hahahahahahahahaha
Dull is an accurate summation of this song and his music in general. For once, max bulk is correct.
I do like his hair though.
How much do you reckon his haircuts cost? You've got to spend money to make money.
