Exclusive: The Tote Announces Club Night

Has Melbourne’s The Tote been caught between a rock and a hard house place? In a surprising move (to say the least!), the iconic venue is set to launch a new club night for the first time in its long, storied and rock’n’roll-dominated history.

In a release issued exclusively to M+N today, Tote booker Amanda Palmer said the night, which will feature top DJs from Melbourne’s house scene, hopes to cater for the area’s changing demographic.

“We’re hoping to attract a new breed of punter to one of Melbourne’s most loved venues,” Palmer said. “There’s been a real explosion in house music lately – with events like Sensation White being such a success – and it’d be foolish of us not to broaden our horizons a little to reflect that.”

Dubbed “Bamboozle”, the new dance night will take place Thursdays in The Tote band room, complete with visuals, giveaways (including a chance to meet the Stafford Brothers) and Vodka Cruiser specials. While she acknowledged the news might not sit well with some Tote regulars, Palmer said it’s all part of the venue’s evolution since re-opening in June last year.

“It’ll still be the old Tote, just with a new twist,” Palmer said. “We’ve also got karaoke, open mic and acoustic nights in the works.”

In other news ... APRIL FOOLS.

Jose Jones you are too obvious.

hedgehog  said about 2 years ago:

This is hilarious! I can't see it lasting more than a month. House DJs are more suited to venues open far later, surely!

''karaoke, open mic and acoustic nights'' make a lot more sense.

That said, good on 'em for trying something outside the square.

Tote used to have pretty regular metal nights when bucketbong was booking, pre Ramone/Milne days. Hip hop nights too. Worked really well for the pub I thought.

what is Tone Deaf and how did i ever end up on their mailing list?

were they operating under a different name previously like hardcore scat porn? i don't know why i would've signed up.

Yeah, because there's so few house nights in Melbourne...

postergirl  said about 2 years ago:

I think they really should have karaoke. I remember going to a karaoke night at the Empress in maybe late 90s/early 2000s where members of the cool local bands of the time provided the live musical backing for the singers. It was awesome. I think about it often. I dream about it.

I've always dreamed of dancing to Dimitri from Paris's 'A Night At The Playboy Mansion' in the tote bandroom. I find this a cruel joke.

Yeah... the Tote only plays rock, and rock is only for bogans.

And house is only listened to by metro-bogans in Commodores on their way to Supplements Warehouse.
