Touring News: Ben Salter, Liam Finn, Pets With Pets

– After “10 years of empty threats”, The Gin Club’s Ben Salter is finally releasing his debut solo album, The Cat. Recorded and produced with Gareth Liddiard (The Drones) and Robert F. Cranny (Sarah Blasko, 78 Saab) at Liddiard’s rural studio in Havilah, Victoria, the album was financed to the tune of $7000 by fans via online funding platform Indiegogo.com. It’s been described as a “strange beast – a blend of avant-garde pop, folk and rock”. Salter will be launching it on the road in August as support for – of all people – The Cat Empire’s Felix Riebl, who’s launching a solo record of his own. The Cat will be out independently through MGM Distribution on August 5.

– It’s all happening for the Finn family. With his famous parents Neil and Sharon about to unveil their new band the Pajama Club to Australian audiences in June, son Liam Finn has just announced a run of dates in August. Finn will perform in full band mode in Melbourne, Adelaide, Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane in support of new album FOMO. The follow-up to his debut, I’ll Be Lightning, the album was recorded with Burke Reid (Gerling, The Drones) at his parents’ Roundhead Studios in Auckland, New Zealand. Finn has also been announced to perform at this year’s Splendour in The Grass, as well as a string of events worldwide including the Pearl Jam Labour Day concert with The Strokes and Queens Of The Stone Age, the Secret Garden Party in the UK, LA’s Culture Collide Festival and Wilco’s curated Solid Sound Festival.

– Melbourne sonic agitators Pets With Pets will belatedly launch their debut album Saturday Aquatic Pixie Acid across the east-coast in June. Released in March through Sensory Projects, the album was described by M+N as “a chance meeting of a fistful of sonic possibilities forced to gel with and corrupt one another”. The tour includes a performance at the Winter Chills festival at The Croatian Club in Newcastle on June 11.
