Watch: Spod’s ‘Karaoke’ Clip For Donny Benét

A one-man karaoke show. This is how Sydney solo artist Donny Benét described himself in a recent interview with M+N – and his label Rice Is Nice have decided to run with it.

They’ve entrusted labelmate Spod – a one-man karaoke show in his own right, who’s recently worked on clips by Art vs Science and Richard In Your Mind – to create a suit of karaoke-style clips for each song on Benét’s new album Don’t Hold Back. The first is for the title track, with the rest set to be released on DVD. Spod told M+N it was an opportunity he couldn’t refuse.

“There's a lot of depth and vulnerable majesty in those Donny songs and they broke and rebuilt my heart several times,” he said. “I just wanted to portray a man of the night, a man of adventure and classic sophistication, a man aware of himself as a man, yet unsure of the world around him whilst never fearing it, the power of his cravings for human touch, a man who is a dreamer of a dream in a dream of dreams daring to dream in the face of the modern world.”

The clips were made with Kenzie Larsen, who directed Richard In Your Mind’s ‘Losing Our Minds’, at a warehouse in Marrickville, Sydney. It was later edited on a roadtrip between Indiana and Chicago “in a blind rush of passion and drive as powerful as a 1991 Michael Jordan dunking on Patrick Ewing”.

“I really wanted to show the world the adventurous spirit, cheeky passion and musical virtuosity of Donny Benét,” Spod said, “the kind of lifestyle that should be afforded to such an artist, and I believe what was achieved was pure success.”

‘Don’t Hold Back’ is out now on Rice Is Nice. It’ll be launched on August 12 at Goodgod in Sydney and August 13 at the Workers Club in Melbourne.

but also i feel he doesn't need to be presented quite so ridiculously, his music is good

JunkiePhil  said about 1 year ago:

I agree, when I saw him live, I didn't know what the fuck was going on, if it was serious or a joke, but after a while the songs were just so damn great I stopped laughing and started dancing.
I think the comedy is good, and mainly comes from the awkwardness of it all, but it may be pushing the music out of the way.
