Ben Lee On Muscles: ‘He’s Unique’

Ben Lee has broken his silence about an infamous 2009 M+N interview with Muscles, during which the electro-pop oddball vented his spleen about his record label Modular, the state of the industry and the “boring” MGMT. (That being said, is he really “breaking silence” if no one’s ever asked him?)
But despite Muscles branding Lee a “celebrity player”, the frustratingly Zen LA-based singer said he enjoyed the chat, so much so he actually labeled it “fun”. Here’s an excerpt from the soon-to-be-published interview, which coincided with the release of new album Deeper Into Dream. Lee, who now lives in Laurel Canyon with his wife Ione Skye and infant daughter, also flagged a possible Australian tour in February.
I know the last time you did something for Mess + Noise it was with Muscles…
That was fun. I don’t know why someone got the impression I didn’t
like it. I enjoyed it. He’s a real character. I haven’t heard from him
in a while.
Were you keeping in touch with him?
A little bit. We actually did a little song together, just via email
back and forth.
Did that come out somehow?
No, no. It’s on my hard drive. [Laughs] It’s pretty cool, actually.
He’s a really interesting guy. I’m looking forward to another album from him.
Yeah, I like people who are unique. He’s unique.
