Triple J Unveils 2012 ‘Next Crop’

The line between the also-rans on Unearthed Radio and the next batch of high-rotation festival mainstays has been drawn in thick red texta, with the announcement of triple j’s “Next Crop” for 2012.

Each year, our national youth broadcaster selects a group of local acts to routinely flog until they live up to the station’s prediction that they will “blow minds over the next 12 months”. Last year’s Next Crop included Kimbra, Papa vs Pretty, The Jezabels, Stonefield and Ball Park Music; all of whom took great strides in 2011 thanks largely to the support of none other than triple j.

Acts on this year’s list include Gold Coast outfit Bleeding Knees Club (pictured), who helped launch the M+N Lunchbox series in Brisbane; triple j “Unearthed High” winners Snakadaktal; multiple Queensland Music Award-winner/punctuation rebel emma louise; and Sydney’s Oliver Tank, who recently featured in New Noise.

TRIPLE J'S 'NEXT CROP' 2012:

this is more like a list of bands triple j have already been flogging heavily for a while that just havn't happened to have released an album yet.

The segregation of 'unearthed also rans' and those considered worthy of full on triple j rotation is become a lot more pronounced. There are few acts on here that havn't already played numerous festivals or have at least had significant hype or support (oliver tank, snakadaktal, etc). Would you really call bleeding knees club, a band nme listed months ago in an equivalent poll, 'next crop'?

It'll be nice when elizabeth rose explodes a little bit, wonderful voice, quite a talented producer also.

why doesn't mess and noise write about how it is obviously a SYSTEM. i have to say m + n have the potential to be a positive force in the Australian music scene but for whatever reason (vested interests etc.) it remains an (albeit cynical) reflection of the mainstream. Of course you can argue that the music industry in Australia isn't big enough to say that there is a mainstream, but the fact is that m + n write about stonefield and kimbra and gotye et all and it's quite tiresome. It's great that they talk about more underground bands but the fact is there is obvious cashola involved and it's just bullshit. Who gives a fuck about any of those bands! Nobody...yet. a few of those bands i'm sure will have banner ads on mess and noise before long and so it goes, but a bit more transparency would be appreciated. I get annoyed by the fact that to ''make it'' in Australia (ha!) you have to jump through these hoops...anyhow, i felt compelled to write this but let the cynicism flow...viva la mediocre!

mule  said about 1 year ago:

for the record that is a drunken rant but nevertheless there is truth in it.

temporarybenbutler  said about 1 year ago:

Er, isn't the SYSTEM exactly what the story is about?

mule  said about 1 year ago:

it is, but not in so many words. it reads like a press release as opposed to a critical appraisal, which i think should be the approach taken. as i was saying there is an underlying cynicism to much that is written on this site but it's hidden to some degree, and i can't help but think there is a reason for that.

Can't believe I missed out on the draw again, maybe I'll have better luck next year.

would be a nice feeling to get this news late in the year! hope they don't rest on their laurels! i guess it means 1 year radio saturation & touring max?

Mule is spot on - drunken rant or not. JJJ play the artists that JJJ thinks will do well - and guess what. It is a musical mono culture that we are producing, look at the ARIAs. Australia acts release what - 1,000 titles a year - and 2 acts clean up most of the major awards????

anonymous  said about 1 year ago:

haven't you learnt to just ignore the aria's? everyone else has.

charlesincharge  said about 1 year ago:

I listened to some Triple J the other day. It was all so unrelentingly 'new'. They need to play more hits. Maybe the Unearthed station will be gold to filter out a lot and allow some back catalogue.

Secondly. The breakfast announcers are woeful. One of them can't speak clearly, its embarrassing.

Thirdly. hate hate hate hate hate haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate etc..

don't be silly, the whole things designed to be a assembly line of new, its all about new.

ktee  said about 1 year ago:

Geez people. A whole bunch of people who are interested in music pick the music they like and promote it throughout the year...I'm not really sure I see the issue here. They also need to play music that the majority of people will like and are interested in. They're not perfect, but they do a lot more to promote new music than any other major radio station out there. Half the people here are whinging that they play too much new music and the rest that they don't.

montyclift  said about 1 year ago:

default translation: 'they are not playing my band, therefore they are cunce'.

ain't it wonderful how some things never change?

letterbox  said about 1 year ago:

the charts tell me this would be a very, very bad idea.

autumnleaves  said about 1 year ago:

I'd rather hear Gotye than most of the hipster noise that passes for ''underground''.

ktee  said about 1 year ago:

@letterbox - well maybe the majority of their listeners....

letterbox  said about 1 year ago:

pfft, they don't need to be triple m, changing their format all the time whilst chasing some imaginary listener that the marketing department dreampt up. obviously they have to keep the abc board happy etc, but they don't have to worry about keeping/gaining sponsors and selling advertisements and all that shit. why does it need to be popular?!!?

ktee  said about 1 year ago:

Did you actually just say why does it need to be popular?

Do you think the ABC will fund a radio station with no listeners?

I think you're living in a dreamland.

slime'n'bones  said about 1 year ago:

few deserving bands in there, many are shit. but this is more about listing every newish band that gets played on jjj. where's twerps and gizard but.

you both summarised and changed what i said, but vaguely, yes, i live in a dreamland.

Definitely. Some of these bands have been getting JJJ airplay for years - Alpine especially (back when they were Swiss) started airing some of the same songs in 2009!

Since when has the cynicism on M+N been hidden?
