New ‘Boutique’ Venue For Newcastle

A new “Melbourne-style” boutique venue will open in Newcastle next week.

Chino’s Bar – located on the Denison street side of The Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle West – will officially open with a performance by Wollongong two-piece Mother & Son on January 11.

The venue (formerly The Red Bar) is the brainchild of Leroy Macqueen and Katherine Friend from local outfit Gooch Palms, who modelled Chino’s on the dive bars frequented during recent trips to the US. The pair aim to fill a gap in Newcastle’s nightlife, hosting a variety of local, national and international bands from a wide range of genres.

“We wanted to create a community based space for like-minded people in Newcastle to see live entertainment, and have a feed and a beer in a relaxed environment,” Macqueen said in a release. “We’ve been really inspired by the amazing small bars we’ve visited in the past years and are thrilled to have the opportunity to execute our thoughts and ideas into Chino’s.”

The news follows the announcement of new a venue in regional Victoria, which will be run by Brendan Noonan from The Stabs and former Old Bar manager Kat Hamilton.

Upcoming gigs at Chino’s include San Francisco’s The Oh Sees (January 18), Sun Araw and Prince Rama (January 24) and The Middle East’s Rohin Jones (February 5). More information here.

''Boutique venue'' sounds nice. Maybe Sydney can learn a lesson from this, like Darlinghurst learning from (Renew) Newcastle. Or something.

Good to hear. It's a good space and where I used to run a music night back in the day.
Will have to check it out.

“Melbourne-style”

so, everyone acts more in the know than everyone else (ha, 'the know'), don't go to each-others gigs or if they do stand up the back with arms crossed, or, waits to see if someone else thinks it's 'cool' before getting behind it.

*urgh, farken cynic.

Good job though!

Wassup peeps! We'll be playing at Newcastle's best and most amazing bar on Wednesday run by the 2 best looking and nicest people in Newy... yes we're talking about CHINO'S!!! Playing with Dead Farmers and The Sufferjets!!! Get in and hang out at Chino's before the FUCKWIT neighbour across the road tries to close us down. THIS IS WHY GOOD THINGS CAN NEVER HAPPEN IN NEWCASTLE!!!! But anyway, come support the bar and the awesome bands that will be playing for your entertainment. PEACE xo
