Dylan Tribute Shows Announced
News posted Thursday, April 26 2012 at 03:00 PM.
Related: Holly Throsby, Josh Pyke, Eskimo Joe, The Grates, Jebediah, Bob Dylan.
The “Bob Dylan tribute” buried in last week’s Splendour In The Grass announcement certainly provoked a strong reaction from the M+N community. “OH MY GOD,” exclaimed forum user mrmagoo, while another claimed it made them “puke” (with excitement, we presume).
Now, we can finally reveal that it’ll be more than just a one-off show. In the vein of The Beatles’ White Album concert and the aborted Nirvana tribute shows, the Bob Dylan 50th anniversary concert will be making its way to a theatre near you (if you live in Brisbane, Melbourne, or Sydney that is).
In celebration of half a century since his 1962 self-titled debut, a quintet of “Australia’s distinctive 21st century performers” will hit the road in July to honour the songs and music of the one and only Robert Allen Zimmerman. They include Basement Tapes Birds alumni Josh Pyke, Jebediah’s Kevin Mitchell and Eskimo Joe’s Kav Temperley; Patience Hodgson from The Grates; and Holly Throsby, who is no stranger to tribute nights, having performed in the recent “They Will Have Their Way” tour.
Tickets for Melbourne and Sydney on sale Monday (April 30), with Brisbane on sale May 7.

i'm disinterested in this big time! no suprises in the names involved really
No Balbi, no purchase.
sad rly
When's the Kav Temperley Tribute Tour happening?
Hahaha.. I just noticed the 'FAIL' signs.
Why oh why...
This is kind of like shooting fish in the barrel, not really worth the effort of igniting the shame cauldron - especially when the pic and lead paragraph have already taken care of things.
Fuckin bullshit. Stinks of Triple J.
why are the triple j bands such vanilla motherfuckers??
''Half a century since his 1962 self-titled debut'' is a terrible excuse for a tribute. Actually... was there a particular reason for the recent Nick Cave tribute? Or the White Album one?
yeah, nah, but we all clicked on it hey?
Heaps of people like really fucking terrible music.*
* Not really a Beatles diss. But tribute acts are always going to be slightly terrible even in a best-case scenario, right?
yeah, nah, but we all clicked on it hey?

I just creamed my dacks with excitement. Its just a sham phil jamieson isnt involved
Maybe Kevin Mitchell will evoke sentimental-country-singer alias Bob Evans to do a more accurate portrayal.
I only clicked on it because I thought it was a Dylan Lewis tribute show.
Damn this looks BAAAAD. Really Bad.
Love Bob, but this is gonna blow chunks of Triple J bile.
I'm calling it now...
This concert will be cancelled due to low ticket sales.
Bump thread when it happens.
I don't think this bubble's quite ready to burst yet. I'd put money on most if not all of these shows selling out.
This is disgusting. Bob wouldn't shit on one name there if they were on fire. Embarrassing
I agree with uninvisible, I'm tempted to get a ticket myself.
just got a ticketmaster email on this,
official website here: http://www.bobdylannight.com/
you can vote for what songs to hear.
shame we can spam it with bad choices.
hmm, and claims to have some charity benefit, but no mention of details.
Really?
...why?!
at $99 cheapest price point? you could've seen bob himself last year for that money.
Alrighty kids, time to get this sucker loaded up with some ''Wiggle Wiggle''
Sure, the Splendour show will prolly go ahead but there is no way in hell this misguided musical abomination is gonna sell out two fucking nights at The Palais!!
Cancelled shows... you'll see!
Or at least one Palais show dropped and the first one offering a last minute ''2 for the price of 1'' ticket deal to fill seats.
Lozenge, the man is his own genre! Of course it'll sell out!
Because it looks to me to be a really great night, I like the line up and I love Bob, so it's a win win.
Most Bob heads, myself included, will avoid this like the plague!
I love Bob, HATE the line-up
Have fun though!
Not that I've ever been one to follow a crowd Lozenge, but your'e of course entitled to your opinion.
Mess+Noise, will you get angry with me if I start a ''yeah, nah, but we all clicked on it hey?'' thread?
Some promoter here in Brisbane seems to put Beatles tributes on every three months with the same bands. Must be an earner.
Yep. A friend had the misfortune of having to attend the most recent one. He said he's never seen the Zoo more packed.
It boggles the mind. Just put a damn Beatles record on.
Ticket prices are the same as what I pay to see Dylan himself every two years.
people like paying for something they know they will like and they know is safe. hence tribute nights thrive.
Good to see prices have fallen to $69 a ticket for these shows. At $100 the artists were simply being greedy. I get it that few people buy CDs anymore. I get it that few people go to their concerts given they are relatively unknown but $100 for a cover band is just ludicrous. No wonder they couldn't sell any seats. The Cherry hotel charged $20 for a cover band (reasonable well known collection of Aussie artists) of the Stones Exile on Main St a few weeks ago. An amazing night, good artists and a very reasonable price...I picked up a couple of tickets at $69 each, 10 rows from the front in the middle. Should be a great night.
There's also a Doors cover band (as opposed to a tribute night) at the Trak in Toorak coming up - $25 a ticket. A bit more reasonable. Tribute nights are better than cover bands IMO but only marginally.
Mark, it's not the artists being greedy. The artists wouldn't be setting ticket prices, it's the promoter (who hires the artists, the venues etc).
I didn't mind spending more than a $100 to see the Leonard Cohen tribute show a few years back, but that had Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Antony etc...my mind boggles that promoters think they can charge those prices to see musicians who aren't in high demand.
Fair point, but wouldn't the artist command a salary for their appearance which would in turn force the promoter to charge an amount so it makes money.
Also, would they require Dylan's approval to put it on?
Would they be required to pay him a royalty?
I can't imagine the artists on this bill asking for serious coin to appear, but in fairness we've no idea what this concert tour costs to present in total so it's all speculation about whether the original ticket prices were greedy or just a fair price to recoup costs with a small margin of profit (I'd bet the former though).
Didn't Bob love the Waifs and ask them to tour the US with him at some point? Not that they are playing at this, but that they wouldn't be out of place.
Yes, there is a royalty paid to the composer of publically-performed works but it's not high...it's not like they've had to throw a few grand Dylan's way to get the rights to do this show (that's why these kinds of cover shows have become very popular). It's just a small amount of $$$, with the payment managed by APRA I believe. I'll defer to someone else here who might know more about this process.
So one would assume they would also require his permission?
Nah, I don't believe they do.
I would have thought the trickier part would be using his name and image in the promotion of something. But people play live cover songs all the time.
If Bob, or whoever's the custodian of his licensing arrangements, didn't like it, he/they could presumably issue a cease and desist order against the performance.
There is a difference between this type of tribute show which would bring in revenue of maybe $100k + and Joe Blog playing a cover night of Dylan songs in front of 100 people. I wonder if this would be required to pay a greater royalty than Joe Blogs show?
The relatively unknown Waifs would be star billing if they were part of this show. Quite like their catchy London song though...
Yep, I saw them open for him right before I left the States. They were actually more energetic than Bob that night, and there was a real buzz around them since nobody had heard of them.
