Another List To Whinge About: Top 50 Aus Guitarists

Where is The Dirty Skanks’ Nathan Cavaleri? That’s surely the question on everyone’s lips following Australian Guitar Magazine’s list of the Top 50 Aussie Guitarists.

Topped by AC/DC’s Angus Young, the list includes many worthy (ie. M+N-approved) contenders such as Deniz Tek, Lobby Loyde, Adalita, Tim Rogers, Marty Willson-Piper, Mick Harvey, Spencer P Jones, Gareth Liddiard (pictured left, giving Dan Kelly an impromptu guitar lesson), Brad Shepherd, Kim Salmon, Ash Naylor, Tom Lyngcoln, Oren Ambarchi and, of course, the late Rowland S Howard, who recently had a custom pedal made in his honour.

It follows a similar list by Spin, the “controversial” 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time, which in a classic piece of online trolling featured Skrillex and Run DMC.

The list was compiled by a “crack team of guitar-playin’ guitar-player lovers” including Peter Hodgson, Andrew P Street and Craig White, plus input from the Australian Guitar editorial team. It’s in the May issue of the magazine, out tomorrow.

ED KUEPPER SHOULD BE HIGHER!!!!!111one

But seriously, I would rate him above those fellas from 'Birthday Party' or whatever they're called. Sheesh. But yeah, it's actually a pretty good list. Tommy Emmanuel though... great guitarist for sure, but not sure if he should be that high.

lolsmith  said about 1 year ago:

And Orianthi made the list? lol.

Maximum Sincere  said about 1 year ago:

Too many stunt guitarists.

Not enough Mossy.

Evilio  said about 1 year ago:

Mick Harvey in Grinderman?

somnia  said about 1 year ago:

No love for Mick Turner eh? Surely one of the most distinctive guitarists in the land of Oz.. Oh well, nice to see Oren gets a look-in.

Maximum Sincere  said about 1 year ago:

Mossy should be first, second and third.

MattuS  said about 1 year ago:

That is, actually a pretty fucken decent list! Maybe add Ben Andrews (My Disco, Agents Of Abhorrence) in there somewhere for mine but otherwise a solid list, classics and somewhat unknowns.

Mikey Young?

lol shut the fuck up.

Dan_Crad  said about 1 year ago:

Darren Middleton?! Was he even their lead guitarist?!

Maximum Sincere  said about 1 year ago:

Do you have to be a lead guitarist to be the best guitarist? Certainly not if you're in AC/DC.

ghoti-max  said about 1 year ago:

Angus is there as most prominent rather than best I reckon..

Dan_Crad  said about 1 year ago:

True, maximum, but what did Middleton offer Powderfinger over Haug? Not that I ever thought about the band that much, his selection just stood out to me as an obvious WTF?

Trolling at its best.

Tom Lyngcoln in the list made my day!

monkeyman  said about 1 year ago:

Tim Rogers gets in instead of Davey Lane?

I know he writes the songs and is more famous n all...But Davey is a very tasteful top notch player and the real star of the fretboard IMHO.

I don't reckon it matters if they know their names or not, they know the band. And no Bob from Blackburn probably listens to very little Aussie music at all.

All i'm saying is the list mainly consists of better known Aussie acts. Which makes sense. Who wants to read a list of awesome players from bands they have never heard of? Bands who have been played on National Radio and/or been around for ages. I'm stoked Oren got a look in as he seems to buck this trend.

JRB  said about 1 year ago:

I'm just stoked my mates got in.

Maybe I just assume that my mates aren't famous?

I just rang Bob from Blackburn. He was stoked to see Kim Salmon on the list, but was OUTRAGED that John Nolan,Mick Turner and Mia Dyson were omitted.

Expect a sternly worded missive to the editor of the The Age.

Tiger Tiger  said about 1 year ago:

what is it exactly that Malcolm Young does so well? Don't get this ACDC worship in the slightest. Sure Angus can shred and play blues solos, but c'mon!

JRB  said about 1 year ago:

Stone cold groove. On the money, full of swagger and balls. Angus shows off, Malcolm is the bedrock.

What happened to your last bassist, blacklight?

He didn't respect The Nang

i hope Glen Schenau makes this list one day.

This.

Actually this whole list is making me realise how much I appreciate ''rhythm guitarists'', and how interchangeable a lot of soloists/lick players seem to be.

AC/DC are renowned for their ''groove'' which is almost entirely provided by Malcolm's right hand, everyone else follows him, including Rudd and Williams

also they are renowned for their ''wall of guitar'' sound, which comes from Mal's big open chord voicings, strumming and guitar sound

Goal attack  said about 1 year ago:

Funny thing, that Pat Cash pic, he can actually shred. Devilwillride can attest to that. Pointless story: I got to play some of Pat's axes once at his parents' place about a million years ago. His nephew was friends with a band I was playing in.

ghoti-max  said about 1 year ago:

No Lisa Mitchell? Comprehension FAIL.

ghoti-max  said about 1 year ago:

There was just no way I could fit in Julia Stone twice and still compensate for Lisa Mitchell unfortunately

Nice to see Adalita included on the list, but her partner and fellow member of Magic Dirt, Raul Sanchez, also deserves to be on the list.

bbtmfb  said about 1 year ago:

Good to see Lloyd Spiegel and Geoff Achison in the list. They have influenced so many young'uns.

TheStaffords  said about 1 year ago:

Geoff Achison is incredible, though I haven't seen him for years. Massive influence on myself, for what it's worth.
