Tributes have flowed for former Crowded House drummer Peter Jones, who died in Melbourne on Friday (May 18), aged 49.

Jones – who joined Crowed House in 1994 after founding drummer, the late Paul Hester, left the band – had reportedly been battling brain cancer for the past 12 months.

“We are in mourning today for the death of Peter Jones,” read a note posted on Crowded House’s website. “We remember him as a warm hearted, funny and talented man, who was a valuable member of Crowded House. He played with style and spirit. We salute him and send our love and best thoughts to his family and friends.”

Jones, who was born in Liverpool, was a prolific session musician, playing with the likes of Rowland S Howard, Kate Ceberano, Spencer P Jones, Paul Kelly, Deborah Conway and Kirsty Stegwazi. He was a member of Harem Scarem, Deadstar, Dianna Kiss and an early-1990s incarnation of The Saints.

Tributes were posted on social media throughout the weekend. Melbourne musician and founder of The Sports Stephen Cummings, who toured and recorded with Jones, recalled him as a “lovely guy, really swinging drummer and, over the last 15 years, a foodie and motorbiker”. While Deborah Conway and partner Willy Zygier described him as a fabulous drummer, who “didn't play the drums, he always played the music”.
