Watch: Tex'n'Tina Take On Gotye

Out of all the horrendous covers of Gotye and Kimbra’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ – and there have been millions – Tex Perkins and Tina Arena’s take on the song at the APRA Awards last night surely takes the cake.

While there’s nothing outlandishly bad about Arena’s YTT take on Gotye’s “male part”, it’s when Perkins – the original Man In Black™ – enters the fray around the two-minute mark for the “female part” (see what they did there?) that shit really goes awry. Not only does he forget the words, but he sings in an impossibly low voice that complements Arena’s highs like fingernails complement a blackboard.

That being said, at least Perkins, who still seems to be method-acting Johnny Cash (note to Tex: just be Tex), is clearly having a bit of fun. It’s more than you could say for Arena, who takes the whole thing incredibly seriously, like she’s auditioning for the part of Kimbra for the next installment of Gotye’s travelling roadshow. And the worst part? Our Wouter was in the audience, probably wishing he never wrote the song in the first place ... again.

All the APRA winners and A-list celeb-spotting here.

That was atrocious!

I cringed throughout...

yoghurt  said about 11 months ago:

That went from bad to worse to unbearable. I dislike both of them even more so now.

hardaker  said about 11 months ago:

is there video of Kate Miller-Heidke doing The Beards? singing their song, that is

TheBastard  said about 11 months ago:

Yup. Agreed. Fucking terrible

Yeah, but it was way to low for her to sing in the verses too. Higher register for her is fine in the chorus but defo cringe worthy...

If this was 'The Voice', I'd say poor song choice for those types of vocalists..wrong range, wrong style, wrong delivery, wrong partnering up..

Did they even fucking rehearse?

ARGHHHHH SO BAD

Lozenge  said about 11 months ago:

Tina was singing WAAAAAY too low, even Gotye sings it fucking higher.

Maybe she was singing low in anticipation of Tex's baritone but the whole thing was a shambles!

...not to mention, she just sang it really bad. I'm sick of this fucking song!

mule  said about 11 months ago:

but you didn't have to siiing so loooww

TheBastard  said about 11 months ago:

I like it, although I don't listen to commercial radio enough to get sick of it. The memes it's produced entertain me.

These guys are suppose to be professional entertainers, don't they know anything?

I forget words all the time, but I'm not stupid enough to do it like that. In front of the person who wrote it. I would have also had the necessary foresight to rehearse as well as to get some feedback or SOMETHING on the performance, or you know, even taken the piss.

This is all kinds of wrong

Maximum Sincere  said about 11 months ago:

Wow, Tina's really out of her range there. What's wrong with the next octave up, woman? Gees.

haha. yup

that's a really bizarre situation: two completely incongruous artists sing a song that rwas nominated for prizes at the same awards show with the artist in the audience...how do the apra people get it so wrong?? did he just not want to sing it or something?

shiroineko  said about 11 months ago:

Does Tex ever do any of his older stuff when he gigs nowadays? Would be good to hear some of the Thug - era tracks, like Electric Wooly Mammoth and Hair Lip.

Also, Gotye should now do a cover of Fuck Your Dad.

CrabApple McNasty  said about 11 months ago:

I thought perhaps everyone was exaggerating, but no. That was god-awful... hated the song anyway, takes skill to make it worse.

Just as an aside, I really want to go and have a beer with Mess and Noise's editorial tone at the moment. Excellence.

some nice feedback for once! thanks!

(beer offer accepted!)

Bowie  said about 11 months ago:

I think ole Tex did the forget the words/lighten the mood in the room vibe so people sort of got into the swing of them doing the cover of the hit. An old old old trick. S yeah pro stuff there.

Also he looks cool tex. He looks great. Be good to hear some deep album from him like cash.

just horrible

yoghurt  said about 11 months ago:

Ben's butchered with glee version is far superior to this nonsense. Maybe APRA awards should have got Ben instead.

yeah. this is it. it's not the performance itself so much as the fact that it happened.

outoftheaircrash  said about 11 months ago:

I met Tex once. But didnt realise it was him till later. He introduced himself as Perko. Hi Perko.

TheBastard  said about 11 months ago:

Whats Gotye's opinion on this?

Not Satisfied

outoftheaircrash  said about 11 months ago:

I'd certainly kill to hear that again. I'd heard of Kate Miller-Heidke before, but never heard her sing. What a voice. Seriously amazing and humourous to boot.

He looks so massive compared to Tiny Tina.

Is this a comedy?
