Gotye: ‘I Am Not Dead’

You know you’ve finally made it when you become the subject of an online death hoax.

Late last night, rumours began circulating that none other than M+N favourite and international pop star Walter de Backer (aka Wouter de Backer aka Gotye) was the victim of a Kurt Cobain-style suicide. A post on CNN iReport, which foolishly allows anyone to post unedited “breaking news”, reported that Gotye had shot himself in the head with a 9mm handgun.

“He was pronounced dead at 4.45AM,” read the report, “and the investigation concluded that the cause of death was suicide. It was confirmed shortly after by family and friends. He was quickly taken to the Central Montmorency Hospital, but died from his injuries shortly after. His family has stated that they plan a closed funeral.”

The news sent Twitter into a frenzy, until Gotye confirmed that he was indeed alive and well, and possibly hanging out with Bon Jovi and Jeff Goldblum in an undisclosed location that wasn’t the afterlife: “I’m not dead,” the singer tweeted, emphatically. It was followed up by a tweet from management confirming the good news: "We're happy to report Wally is alive and well. Tell your friends :)."

However, the story has taken another twist with bandmate Tim Shiel confirming that Gotye had in fact died, but not by his own hand as originally reported. “It saddens me to confirm the news of Gotye's passing,” he tweeted. “He suffered cardiac arrest while flying a unicorn over a double rainbow.”

Richard Wilkins wasn’t available for comment.

Assuming he’s alive, Gotye will return to Australia for a four-date stadium tour in December. Dates here.

Thank goodness. I was becoming worried. I thought something had to be wrong.

M+N had gone almost a whole week without a Gotye story.

For all his success, it seems he could only afford to be taken to a veterinary hospital too.
