Before they embarked on their “epic tour” with Kingswood, LACHLAN EMBANK of Damn Terran spoke with Money for Rope’s RICK PARNABY about hangover cures, Wally Meanie cameos and album plans. The tour concludes this week with shows in Queensland and NSW. Dates below.
Lachlan: You guys just launched your new single '10 Times'. When did the song come about and how on earth did you make it so catchy?
Rick: That song has been kicking around for yonks. We usually played it at house parties but never proper gigs. The secret to catchy songs is the fewer chords the better. In this case, two chords did the trick. Steve Schram who produced it can also take credit for “catchifyin’” it.
Lachlan: Who came up with the idea for your video clip? Can we expect more cameos from Wally [Kempton, Even/The Meanies] in future video clips?
Rick: I believe our singer Jules proposed, “We could just have a guy walking around the street eating shitloads of food.” And we just kinda went with that. The bloke we used in the clip is Coz. He’s taller than [Fremantle Dockers ruckman] Aaron Sandilands and always comes up the front at gigs and looks scary. The scariest moment I had on the day of the shoot, which was freezing cold, was throwing a bucket of water at Coz. He is a gentle giant though. Our manager Wal looks so beautiful on film he is most welcome to make a cameo in all future clips.
Lachlan: There are a total of 13 people going on this tour. Shit is going to get a bit rowdy. What’s your best party trick and hangover cure?
Rick: I have this really great party trick where I drink too much in the afternoon then play and sing really poorly at that night’s show. The only way to cure a hangover is to get up in the morning and swim in the ocean. We try to get to the ocean at every opportunity on tour. We usually buy some hand lures and go fishing for our lunch, so far MFR: 0 Fish: 8.
Lachlan: Any plans to unleash a full-length this year? If so what can we expect.
Rick: Our debut album is “in the can” as they say. All we need to do is everything else that happens like artwork and all that business-y stuff that I don’t understand. I quite like the sound of the record. As I mentioned, Steve Schram produced it and did a wonderful job. Expect distorted everything and some loudness.
Lachlan: What are you most looking forward to on this tour?
Rick: Catching some fuckin’ fish! Also escaping Melbourne weather and making some new musical chums.
Lachlan: Have you witnessed a Kingswood live show? What do you imagine it to be like?
Rick: I’ve actually never had the pleasure. I’ve seen photos and they have beautiful hair. I reckon they might put on a show that could have come straight out of 1970. Coincidentally our singer Jules owns a ’70 Kingswood.
Lachlan: Here's your chance to drop a few names. Who are your favourite local bands at the moment?
Rick: There’s this great band called Damn Terran. Also we just recorded a split release with The Bowers who we all have massive crushes on. We’re quite jealous of how amazing King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard are. And in my opinion the most exciting band in the country right now is Royal Headache. I even bought a t-shirt.
Lachlan: Any advice you would like to share before we head out on the road together?
Rick: Don’t accept liquids from bass players.
Lachlan: Kingswood, Money For Rope & Damn Terran walk into a bar... What happens next?
Rick: Epicness?
