Listen: New Tame Impala ‘Elephant’

Related: Tame Impala.

The first official single from Tame Impala’s second album Lonerism has officially dropped. And while it starts off as a chugging bit of stoner rock, it quickly turns into the synth extravaganza drummer Jay Watson promised us in an interview with M+N back in March. Titled ‘Elephant’, the song is described as “a swaggering glam strut about a cocky jock playing the jerk”. Hmmmmmm…

It’ll be released via the usual channels in August with remixes from Modular labelmates Canyons and legendary US musician Todd Rundgren. In an interview with M+N last year, frontman Kevin Parker said Rundgren’s 1973 opus A Wizard, a True Star was a big influence on the making of the record.

Lonerism will be out locally on October 5 through Modular. Tame Impala play this weekend’s Splendour In The Grass.

This has got nothing on the other song that's floating around.

josejones  said about 10 months ago:

Agreed. They picked the wrong single.

Bowie  said about 10 months ago:

Heh. Sounds like wolfmother put through the Marc Bolan filter.

Wow I really like that. Something about the melody is very Beatles.

I'm not sure if I'll still be cool if I like this or not.

Fuggit. I haven't been this excited about an Australian band in a long time.

I don't get the haters who put these guys down. They're not Wolfmother ferrchrissakes!

Plus without TA you might not have Pond, whose album I listened to in it's entirety on my way to work and made my day better by 36%. Bring on the album - I'll be turning up the volume.

When the song started I thought ''here we go, sounds like when an advertising agency asks a commercial musician to do something zeitgeisty with a T-Rex flavour'' but as the good bit kicks in I decided to put those misgivings aside and enjoy the song. Overall I dig it, even though it will get a lot of annoying syncs and be everywhere.

Also made me wonder what Midnight Juggernauts will come up with next.

Bowie  said about 10 months ago:

I'll listen to the whole song next time and not the first three bars..lol

Theres also the Syd Barrett chromatic bit..missed that.

I still like corporal clegg more.

It's not very good. IMHO

yep.
the wolfmother comparison is fair i reckon. both bands re-approriated classic/prog rock for new, younger audience.

mule  said about 9 months ago:

definite john lennon influence on this one, along with sabbath et. al. really quiet production compared to apocalypse dreams. i prefer pond in general but really look forward to the release of this one, they're crafty thieves.

In terms of it being the 'wrong single choice' surely 'single' is an outdated terms these days? for all intents and purposes apocalypse dreams was the first single.

mule  said about 9 months ago:

the wolfmother comparison is obvious, but i think the influence is coming from the bands that wolfmother were influenced by, not wolfmother themselves...

whatwhat  said about 9 months ago:

dig this band.

whatwhat  said about 9 months ago:

not out yet roasty.

(i'm hoping for a minidisc, just quiety.)

It sounds a lot like Kasabian ('Shoot the Runner'). Not a bad song though.
