Watch: Steve Kilbey On Stage With Afghan Whigs

At The Afghan Whigs’ debut Australian show in Melbourne last Wednesday (July 25), the US noir-rock legends covered ‘One Day’ by The Church.

The following night in Sydney, they went one step further, bringing Steve Kilbey up on stage for an energetic rendition of the song complete with backing vocals from Whigs frontman Greg Dulli and Kilbey’s trademark dance moves. The musicians’ esteem for each other was obvious, with Kilbey turning to Dulli and saying, “I love this guy”, before he left the stage.

As Dulli told M+N in his recent Aus Playlist, ‘One Day’ was one of the first songs The Afghan Whigs’ ever played when they formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1986. “I have loved them since I first heard them … and I was thrilled to meet Steve Kilbey a few years ago,” he said. “He's a phenomenal songwriter and they really carved out their own sound. I remember being blown away when Heyday came out and thinking they were gonna be huge.”
