Melbourne Fest Announced: Shellac, Thurston Moore, Antony

Shellac will play their first Australian show since 1993 in October. The Chicago three-piece – Steve Albini, Bob Weston and Todd Trainer – will play two shows at the Hi-Fi Bar as part of Melbourne Festival, supported by My Disco and Black Level Embassy.

Unveiled tonight and co-curated by Hannah Fox and Tom Supple, the Melbourne Festival bill also includes:

Antony and the Johnsons backed by a 44-piece orchestra for Swanlights, a piece originally commissioned by New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
– Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo playing separate solo shows. Moore will perform at Hamer Hall with an ensemble featuring harp and violin, with Kid Sam’s Kieran Ryan in support; while Ranaldo will play the Hi-Fi supported by Sydney’s The Laurels.
– Seattle-based hip-hop duo THEESatisfaction.
Big Freedia & The Divas, who were here last December for Meredith.
Bermuda Float, a sunset boat cruise in collaboration with Sugar Mountain, featuring US psych-pop six-piece Puro Instinct and Melbourne’s NO ZU.
– Two performances by Billy Bragg: a celebration of Woody Guthrie’s centenary; and songs from his back catalogue.
Conversations with Ghosts, which pairs Paul Kelly with recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey, electronic soundscapist James Ledger and 10 artists from the Australian National Academy of Music.

Melbourne Festival takes place from October 11-27 at venues across the CBD. A full program, including a series of international films curated by Richard Moore, will be available from 7pm here.

On a non-musical note, anyone been to Impasse and/or Hold? I've now been to both, really interesting and somewhat challenging experiences. Pretty much sold out, there are a few slots free for Impasse, but would be interesting to hear from others who went. In a non-spoilerish style. Maybe PM even.

black wasp!  said about 6 months ago:

No, but would have loved to - also disappointed I had to miss Grandma Lo-fi, which looks great. Interesting that Nick Wishart (Toydeath) did the sound design for Impasse. Did you like it? Still time to check Hold out, so I might.

ocelotl  said about 6 months ago:

Wasn't all that aware of the sound design actually! I noticed sounds here and there but it wasn't a predominant aspect for me, the start was pretty claustrophobic so I was in a weird state after that! Anyway if you follow the booking links from the Arts House site, you can see a few vacancies for Impasse. Hold looks fully booked for now, but something might become available.

Velodrone  said about 6 months ago:

Shellac-related... was Bob Weston playing through a Rusty Box?

stirfry  said about 6 months ago:

^ yes. Ampeg SVT helped. That Rusty Box pedal sounds fantastic. I'm thinking of ordering one from the states. Can't seem to find one here.

Velodrone  said about 6 months ago:

I thought so!

My friend has one. Totally worth buying one if you like that bass tone. I thought you could only buy them direct from Tronographic?

stirfry  said about 6 months ago:

That's probably why I'm struggling in Oz, thanks Velodrone!

BurritoEnchilada  said about 6 months ago:

Yep, Rusty Box into the power section of an Ampeg SVT 4.

I ordered mine when I first posted about them being available, 22 days ago.

GOD  said about 6 months ago:

pretty much the day they were made available, can't remember exactly

Velodrone  said about 6 months ago:

Okay. I will wait three more days then.

I ordered mine 19 days ago.

CryMeARiver  said about 6 months ago:

It's worth the wait, which one did you get?

Velodrone  said about 6 months ago:

I got the screen printed Shellac tour poster (one for me, one for a friend) and The Commute screen printed poster.

This is ''The Commute''.

steveholt  said about 6 months ago:

Got mine. It's a peach. Can't wait to get it framed.

Velodrone  said about 6 months ago:

I'm pretty sure you can get Ikea frames that will fit nicely.

I got one for an Archers Of Loaf poster I bought last year.

Velodrone  said about 6 months ago:

Got them last night.

So rad.

stirfry  said about 3 months ago:

Got the Tronographic Rusty Box that Bob Weston used on this Shellac tour. Played my Japanese Fender P (98-2000) through a Fender SuperBassman 300, with an Ampeg cab. Can dial in anything with that pedal and that bass head. With the Ampeg cab helped. Then I took my pedal and bass outside the store and knew I couldn't afford what I was trying out, but really wanted to hear what it sounded like. The sound is awesome with the Rusty Box, definitely you can get Bob's tone (who was involved in creating it). Love this pedal.
