Tim Rogers: ‘Maybe It’s Time To Get Another Singer?’

Tim Rogers has reiterated claims he’s getting in another singer to front You Am I.

Rogers caused a stir on the youami.com.au forums a couple years ago following an interview with The Herald Sun, in which he intimated that the band was “getting a singer in” for 2010’s You Am I. But while that never materialised, the 42-year-old musician says he may need to draft someone in to help fulfil his dreams of making a “hardcore” record.

“I can’t sing,” he told M+N in a soon-to-be-published interview. “I’ve destroyed my throat. Maybe it’s time to get another singer? I really want that to happen, and 98 per cent of the listening public does as well.”

Rogers said the band will start thinking about a new record once they stop socialising. “There’s a lot written for it,” he said. “There’s songs there, and there’s intent there, but there’s part of me that doesn’t want to mess up the fun we’re having.”

Rogers said he wanted to make a record that was more representative of the band’s live sound. “I’d like to think that it’s all extremely direct, which we haven’t done for a while. That’s what we do when we play live. It’s time to start thinking less. The last record, [You Am I], which I love, we really thought about it. We talked about it so much. We need to talk less – we do that when we go out.”

Rogers’ new solo album Rogers Sings Rogerstein is out now through ABC imprint Four Four. It’s a collaboration between Rogers and a US native called Shel Rogerstein, who may or may not exist. Details here.

2010’s [You Am I](/releases/2000770].

Never heard it... any good?

GrantleyBuffalo  said about 8 months ago:

If he's worried about his voice, maybe he shouldn't be impersonating Shane fucking Crawford for AFL moneyzzz.

a you am i hardcore record is a most excellent idea, something Sound As Ever II without the occasional pussy-footing would be awesome, but fuck this idea of getting another singer in. if Tim's too much of a pussy to sing, get Andy to do the job, his cover of Forgotten Son at the Annandale secret show last year was amazing, guy can fuckin tear

Sound As Ever II would be the coolest gimmick ever

Tim Rogers is more than just a vocalist, he's a front man. Singer would need a LOT of charisma to match Rogers.

Captain Oblivious  said about 8 months ago:

Yeah, I think this one of those pieces of YAI folklore that they like to give an airing every now and then...

It's fucking brilliant... reeeally

one of those records that doesn't hit you immediately but then grows on you n' sticks! best thing they've done in yonks.... and Tim's vocals on it are great.

JD Fortune is available.

Stocky  said about 8 months ago:

I think their last album was their best in decades partly because this time they seemed to write and adapt the songs to suit Tim's now raspy soft-spoken whisper. Convicts tried to rock hard but Tim no longer had the voice for it. I don't know whether a new singer would work though.

They should get Zanzibar Chanel as vocalist.

I'm not sure if Tim is angling for compliments with these comments about his voice, but I'll bite...

I think it is a great, distinctive voice. Sort of a warts 'n' all falsetto, and great to hear him actually singing the lyrics he wrote himself.

The distinctiveness of his voice actually struck me when I saw his 'Rogers Sings Rogerstein' performance in Brissie 2 weeks ago. Something I'd taken for granted after 15 years of hearing it, though it probably does take some getting used to for new fans.

crackwhore  said about 8 months ago:

Rogers' voice has been shot for the last 10 years. Having first seen YAI in 92' and countless times after that i swore i'd never bother seeing them again after a Hi-Fi gig in 07'.....his voice was a croak and ruined the gig.

jimmy hutspah  said about 8 months ago:

i dont necessarily think rogers' voice is gone, its just gone when it comes to that early YAI stuff. i still think he has a great voice when it comes to his solo stuff, the bennetts lane shows etc etc. even the last YAI record I thought he sounded pretty great on. he just cant get to those early highs anymore. I saw them try to do Purple Sneakers at the Tote last year (which musically sounded pretty damn awesome btw) but the vocals were pretty disastrous.
