Film clips are often so fixated on an iffy concept that it’s nice to see one where the band just plays. That’s exactly what Melbourne’s Pageants do here, going through ‘Persian Fairy Floss’ on stage at their hometown’s stately Athenaeum. (Although, guys – you’re facing the wrong way.) Made with their friends Tom Campbell and Lucas Moy, the straightforward clip was shot a few months ago, unfortunately on a day when percussionist Ben Taylor had to study for an exam.
Straightforward isn’t a word you’d really use to describe Pageants’ debut album, Dark Before Blonde Dawn, of which we said, “Nothing’s clear-cut here: it’s an album to inspire double-takes and dreamy musings alike.” But off-kilter lyrics aside, ‘Persian Fairy Floss’ isn’t as weird as other songs on the record. It happily recalls Pavement’s ‘Major Leagues’ and comes close to losing itself in leader Ben Pell’s airy drawl and that shivering guitar twang.
Dark Before Blonde Dawn is out now on Sensory Projects. Pageants play this Sunday (Oct. 14) at Gasometer with The Ocean Party, Hot Palms and Orbits. They’ll launch the album on November 16 at Northcote Social Club, with Pearls and Full Ugly supporting.
