Melbourne's Northcote Social Club Bound For Sydney

News posted Wednesday, October 17 2012 at 10:00 PM.
Related: Northcote Social Club, Newtown Social Club.

Sydney is set to become just a little bit more Melbourne, with a much-loved venue announcing plans for an outpost up the Hume.

Akin to the Hi-Fi’s expansion into Brisbane and Sydney, the team behind Melbourne’s Corner Hotel and Northcote Social Club have announced plans to open a sister venue in Newtown. While details are still scarce, a Facebook page for the Newtown Social Club was set up yesterday, promising the “same atmosphere that’s known and loved at our Melbourne venues”.

The venue is described as a “free entry social club with friendly staff, great food, great drinks and all our favourite local, national and international tunes pumping through the place”. There are also plans for a self-contained band room, with the venue’s address and opening date to be announced soon.

Opened in 2004 on the former site of the Commercial Hotel on High Street, the Northcote Social Club has become one of Melbourne’s premiere mid-sized bandrooms. It’s recently hosted the likes of Pond, Zulu Winter, The Rubens, Redd Kross and Last Dinosaurs, and was the destination for Lady Gaga’s official after-party in July. Sadly, The Northcote Social Club’s sister venue, The East Brunswick Club, shut its doors earlier this year after the new owners decided to redevelop the bandroom into a five-storey apartment building.

Meanwhile, another Newtown venue – the refurbished Newtown Hotel – is set to re-open at the end of the month. Refurbished over the past 18 months, the 130-year-old hotel plans to host local bands and DJs. Other features include a beer garden and Greek restaurant.

Newtown Hotel is open now..abused happy hour last night. Looks great so far

geneclark70  said about 7 months ago:

I wonder if it'll happen in the old Newtown RSL space, which was briefly known as Goldman's in the '90s, home to great shows by The Go-Betweens, Tim Rogers etc.

anonymous  said about 7 months ago:

newtown rsl on emore road is turning into student/boarding housing (approval went through mid/late august) so unless this is a short term thing?

or the bottom went out of the housing market and they've delayed the plans, still, the sword would be hanging over the venues head.

ghoti-max  said about 7 months ago:

Might be the space they opened up for the Fringe on Eliza St?

anonymous  said about 7 months ago:

the hub!?

mule  said about 7 months ago:

Thought the Newtown hotel looked a bit gross myself...

can't think of where they would put the nsc but Newtown needs a space like that, hopefully there won't be any pokies.

mule  said about 7 months ago:

Would be awesome if something happened with the hub...Newtown is already going to shit really but a good venue would be a welcome change.

ghoti-max  said about 7 months ago:

The Hub would be awesome!

Captain Oblivious  said about 7 months ago:

Nah, the Hub would be a disaster. The room would be too way big to be sustainable and it's right next door to residentials.

mule  said about 7 months ago:

Something really should happen with it though, I don't get why it's just been sitting unused for so long

Captain Oblivious  said about 7 months ago:

Yeah, apparently it's been locked up in a family trust dispute for years.

Typical

Pepper Jack  said about 7 months ago:

Excellent and very welcome news this is.

dannulla  said about 7 months ago:

Won't be the rsl or the fridges and kitchen equipment has been taken out and sold on grays bout two weeks ago,

andydepressant  said about 7 months ago:

It's welcome news but it will make things a little trickier for Green Room and The Union as Nic books a fair few Melbourne indies there - especially as it's touting free entry. But in the bigger picture it's just what Newtown needs. Also might make some inroads on Good God.

Has anybody been upstairs at the Newtown Hotel? There would be room there right? The Bank has been bought by the people who run the Courthouse so in the future that might get done up into a less offensive space. Plenty of room for a band room upstairs there.

andydepressant  said about 7 months ago:

Sorry should say Nic books a fair few Melbourne acts at Green Room.

mickster  said about 7 months ago:

I'll settle for the monkey butlers.

It's the Sando. Trademark application here.

Note the name of the company, 387 King Street Pty Ltd...... and what building resides at 387 King St you ask? The SANDO!

Captain Oblivious  said about 7 months ago:

Well played.

looch  said about 7 months ago:

Be really good if they could open the back up in the band room instead of the single door entry. Really hard to get in to the room when there are 150 + in there..... and yet there is always a 2/3 metre gap at the front.

Upstairs toilet would be tops too...

This is a major win. Awesome news.

Kit  said about 7 months ago:

The old Feedback site (on top of train station) could probably hold 200 - 250 depending on fittout. The Hub would be about 500 - 600. I cannot see an 800 capacity venue working in Newtown, let alone any other part of Sydney ....

Moot to this thread now, but Enmore Theatre (about 100m from the Sando by crow so) is 1500-2500, and Goldmans I reckon would have been 600 or up on the top floor (I think the middle floor was meant to be 250, but once you got over 100 the stage was invisible.) The Hub at 500-600 is probably about right if they put seats back in, but could take more if left standing*.

And going five minutes either direction from Newtown - The Factory's 700ish without seats, isn't it? And the York Theatre in the Seymour gets used for gigs, and that's a hair under 800.

*It's generally awkward to have a sloping floor to stand on for hours, but it works for Brixton Academy...

Captain Oblivious  said about 7 months ago:

Yeah, I should have prefaced that with ''another'' 800 capacity venue.... given the Factory, Enmore and Metro would all be booking similar acts to what the NSC would presumably be going after.

Kit  said about 7 months ago:

It worked for Goldmans/@Newtown though. And the Gaelic was 800 before the rebuild, and is gone completely now - there's a gap in the market!

Actually the Hi-Fi probably only holds >800 since they gutted it, but on the other hand it's horrible now

looch  said about 7 months ago:

Does this mean the hipsters will leave Goodgod and take over this joint?

looch  said about 7 months ago:

Seriously though - Newtown is in a damn good state atm for live music.

Enmore Theatre (for large acts)
Newtown Social Club (Sando)
Notes
Vanguard
Union Hotel (free)
Botany View (Sundays - free)
Townie (free)
Green Room (ok so thats Enmore)
+ The Factory Theatre close by + potential gigs at the Newtown Hotel + Marrickville Warehouses

Good times !

Kit  said about 7 months ago:

If we're counting Marrickville then there's also the Red Rattler, Camelot Lounge (Qirkz' ongoing temporary but legal home), and the Bowlo - Ha Ha or Mad Racket nights often have live acts.

Jimmy Edgar's Australian tour made its Sydney stop in a flooring warehouse in Marrickville last Friday, great fucking night.

Sly Fox had some live bands during the Fringe Festival too, and have a new stage in. No-one ever seems to be able to make a regular go of a night there though.

Kit  said about 7 months ago:

Might as well count Manning Bar as local too, that's well over 900 (and hugely underused).

MelonHCST  said about 7 months ago:

Is the Townie still doing shows?

mule  said about 7 months ago:

Getting a new system in at manning soon which will hopefully attract some bigger acts...swans are playing there next year!

Remember Ratcat + Magic Dirt @ St Georges Hall, above the old Repressed Records shop?
Horrible sounding, beautiful room.
I guess the school now just uses it, no?

You Am I did a show up there too with The Strokes supporting.

Kit  said about 7 months ago:

The Ratdirt / Magic Cat shows at the school were a last-minute reschedule because Goldmans closed down suddenly - the room sounds way too terrible to be used on the reg. Or ever again, probably.

Kit  said about 7 months ago:

Yep, on looch's list
