Ethio-jazz, power-pop, chillwave, grunge revivalism and the most idiosyncratic lyra player in Crete.
This is what you can expect from the seventh annual Golden Plains festival line-up, which was unveiled by organiser Aunty Meredith today. In addition to the already announced Cat Power and George Clinton comes: the returning Dinosaur Jr, who played back-to-back with Pavement in 2010; Sweden’s the Tallest Man on Earth; The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion; Ethiopian jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke; Red Kross (fresh from their appearance at Dig It Up! in May); and Psarantonis, Crete’s foremost exponent of the lyra (a bowed three-stringed instrument) backed by The Dirty Three’s Jim White on drums. (Psarantonis played one of the most memorable sets at All Tomorrow’s Parties Mt Buller in 2009.)
The local program features Bushwalking, Dick Diver, New Zealand’s Opossum, No Zu, The Mark Of Cain, Six Ft Hick and Flume. Full line-up below.
First round ballot winners have been notified this morning, with the second round now open at the Golden Plains website.
