Tours In Brief: Dan Kelly, Psy Ants, SPOD, Red Ink
– Taking some time off from making his new album Inspiration Point in London and Italy with repeat producer Aaron Cupples, Dan Kelly is doing a quick pair of solo gigs in Canberra and Brisbane next month. He’ll be showcasing new songs, selling Dan Kelly shower caps and possibly overusing his smoke machine, if the presser is to be believed. Kelly also recently assisted his little-known uncle in the making of his own modest album.
Fri, Nov 16 – Smith's Alternative Bookstore, Canberra, ACT
Fri, Nov 23 – Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane, QLD (w/Keep On Dancin’s)
– Likened to King Snake Roost and Steve Albini’s Rapeman, Psy Ants were a Brisbane band originally called Science that have now split up and moved on with acts like Per Purpose, Knee Chin and Cured Pink. But to mark the release of their one and only release, the seven-song Bit Tongue Prik 12”, the band are briefly making the rounds one last time after a set at Maggot Fest this weekend. The 12” is limited to 300 copies, each with a CD-R version. Wonder how many people will misread the flyer and show up wanting ‘Gangnam Style’?

– “Just a cheeky few/Not goin’ until we spew.” That’s the goal announced in SPOD’s new single ‘Couple of Drinks’, a cheeky ode to the quest for restraint. Summery in tone and garage-y in sound, it’s a live favourite that has often inspired a sing-along at gigs. It’s out digitally next Friday (Nov 9) and should tide us over while SPOD toils over an album due next year – in between brews, that is. Says the man himself: “The time seems just right to get out there and hit the magnetic tape with Owen Penglis and play some live instruments for once and stop being a computer deadshit, so that’s what I did.” There are three gigs on the horizon too, with support in Melbourne from High Tension, a new outfit boasting members of Young & Restless, The Nation Blue and LoveLikeElectrocution.

– Melbourne’s Red Ink are hitting the road behind ‘Empty Town’, the first track from their recent EP The Colour Age. With a video shot in Brighton, England during a UK tour this year, the single follows previous entries like ‘Audrey’ and ‘Battle Scars’. “Created between a bicycle shop and a beach house on a peninsula coastline,” the EP “breathes inherently Australian loneliness and space.”
