What: In the Days When the World was Wide by The Darling Downs.

When: July 27 through Fuse.

Key notes: Third album from banjo-centred duo of Ron S. Peno (Died Pretty, Ron S. Peno & The Superstitions) and Kim Salmon (The Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon, Kim Salmon & The Surrealists). First in six years, following 2007’s From One to Another and Salmon’s 2012 Old Bar residency, which reunited the pair. (“We never broke up,” says Peno. “We just had a break.”) Named for the Henry Lawson line “And all was wonderful, new and strange in the days when the world was wide” from one of Peno’s longtime favourite books. Features contributions from Mike Stranges and Julitha Ryan and co-production by Peno, Salmon, Stranges and Andrew “Idge” Hehir. Ranges from the Burt Bacharach and Pet Sounds feel of opener ‘Saved’ (stream below) to the country-gospel closer ‘Light of the World’. Launching July 27 at The Toff in Town.

From the presser: “Two artists who refuse to rest on past glories … harks back to a simpler time, a time when anything seemed possible.”
