I actually run both nike and runkeeper - which is overkill I know. I like runkeeper for its manually logging, but nike+ does look so pretty.

I haven't been brave enough to try fartleks, but have been doing intervals of fast pace 800m, then slow 400, another 800, slow 400, then fast 400, slow 200....and so forth, just on a track.

I've found I'm improved my middle distance times and speeds up to 20% in a month. I'm doing a 10K race on Sunday and hopefully that increase in speed can transfer to a longer distance.
