unvisble, you misunderstand me. here's the problem.

playing music - it's fun. that's why bands who make no money can keep on for years. they get drunk, play a show, and get to be cool for a night. sometimes they get to travel, and then get drunk and be cool and appreciated by (most of) the people at the show.

running a venue, running a store, isn't fun. its hard work, tedious, time consuming, etc. that's why volunteers burn out - they dont get a holiday at the end of it, they dont get bought drinks every time they go to work, they dont really get appreciated by the people at the show - who usually have no idea how hard the job actually is - and fairly often they dont get appreciated by the bands either. and most people dont want to work for nothing, either, especially if its actual work work - im willing to bet theres only one or two people who clean the toilet at black wire. if it gets cleaned at all.

thats what i mean that the business model is flawed. you dont see anyone in their fifties doing this kind of thing, because once youve done it for ten years (at absolute best) you burn out and get old and bitter. its an unsustainable model.

i would rather there be 10 black wires in every city in world - as long as they can all stay open and keep everyone happy. the 'industry' IS fucked, but simply repeating 'the industry model is flawed' and 'its a principled stance' is just rhetoric that the diy scene uses to displace responsibility for the failures of the diy model.

i didn't know everyone who worked at paint it black in sydney, but the people i do know who worked there speak of it with bitterness, and that their experiences there were really draining. the people who work at a lot of community radio stations often talk about those places the same way. not naming any names, i probably dont have to, but certain places seem worse for it than others.

on the other hand, via studios in brisbane has been open to cheap and free gigs on premises (i havent been up there for a few years, dunno if they still do it) and it has had all the spirit of the diy scene but has managed a solid, sustainable business model thats seen the people involved sustain a positive attitude and participate in alternatives to the standard industry practice over years and years.

thats what i mean when i say the model is flawed and that it needs to take a long hard look at itself. just because the industry model is flawed doesnt mean the alternative to it is automatically perfect.

no arguments from anyone, but at some point the DIY scene is going to have to face the reality that theirs is, too.

a) if you aren't paying your staff your model is flawed.

b) if you aren't paying your staff and still can't afford to meet your bills, your model is extremely flawed - or you don't actually have a business model at all.
