Sugar Mountain Adds Dirty Projectors, Lower Plenty, More

Post I Made about 7 months ago

Sugar Mountain has unveiled a second round of acts so good, it’s like another whole festival stacked on top of the first one. Joining the previously announced gems are Brooklyn iconoclasts Dirty Projectors (pictured), bubblegum brats Hunx and His Punx, “humble and understated” Boomgates, indie-R&B super-duo Brothers Hand Mirror (Oscar & Martin’s Oscar Vincente Slorach-Thorn and HTML Flowers’ decidedly male Grant Jonathon Gronewold), the ever-pining Collarbones, lovable Sydney producer Jonti and those casual geniuses Lower Plenty.

For those keeping score, that's a Sugar Mountain return for Collarbones, who played the first one in 2011. Melbourne electronic duo Naysayer and Gilsun will also curate a one-off audio-visual experience, and synth act Forces will collaborate with choreographer Antony Hamilton (Chunky Move, Australian Dance Theatre), with the visual arts program to be announced later this month.

Sugar Mountain goes down Saturday, January 19. Tickets are on sale now. Full music line-up below.

Cloud Control Wins The 2011 AMP

Post I Made about 2 years ago

Cloud Control have just been announced as the winner of this year’s Australian Music Prize (The AMP) for their debut album Bliss Release.

The Blue Mountains-born quartet have won $30,000 courtesy of PPCA, beating out the likes Pikelet, Dan Kelly, Richard In Your Mind, Tame Impala, Sally Seltmann, Gareth Liddiard, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and The Holidays.

"We would like to thank our managers, all at Ivy League for helping us put the record together and out in the world and putting up with our 'last minute' approach to decision making," said the band in a statement. (They're currently on tour in Europe.) "We feel honoured to be included on such a list. Australian music is in a good place right now - we've found across Europe at the moment that a lot of people are excited about what's happening in Australia at the moment. The future looks bright."

Held on the set of iRock at The Annandale in Sydney tonight (March 3), the ceremony featured performances by Oh Mercy (launching their new album Great Barrier Grief), Pikelet and The Holidays.

Previous winners of The AMP have included The Drones, Augie March, The Mess Hall, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Lisa Mitchell.

So long and thanks for all the CDs

Discussion I Made about 2 years ago

Hi there,

I'm officially leaving Mess+Noise on the 16th of July. Which coincidentally is the next M+N Lunchbox gig, Dan Kelly, 1pm at 1000 pound bend (always working, yeesh).

It's been a great ride building something that didn't exist four years ago and now surpasses all the expectations I had for it. I had no idea I'd make so many friends through this tinpot magazine and website, receive so many defamation letters or hear so much amazing music and so so much terrible music. From now on Darren is the goto Mess+Noise guy, I couldn't think of a better pair of hands for it to be in.

If you need any shit fixed, good luck.

By the way, Dan Kelly 1pm 100 Pound Bend. Be there.

Thanks,
Gotta zip!

A Community Cup Classic

The Triple R/PBS “Megahertz” and the “Espy Rockdogs” played out another Community Cup thriller at Elsternwick Park in Melbourne on Sunday (June 25), with the Megahertz prevailing by a single point. More than 10,000 people attended the event, which saw performances by The Living End, Money For Rope, Little Freddie and The Pops, The Blackeyed Susans and Nick Barker and The Reptiles. About $180,000 was raised for charity partner Reclink. Photos by KATE SEABROOK

Seems ok to me, it may be one of the new ads screwing it up again. In the meantime, use this link:

All About Me

So, I make a magazine with a fine good-looking bunch of friends and their friends. We're all very happy to see it hit the pavement every other month as it gives us a chance to get started on the next one, use up our beer tabs around the cities, listen to the new pile of CD's and track down where Aleks, TSB and Ramadge are playing next.
