On its original release, it was loathed by the mainstream, it existed in a vacuum for years before ''approval'' by the likes of Pitchfork or even (god help us) Rolling Stone. To appreciate or even like Loveless in 1992 was really out on the fringes of music critical culture. In fact, bizarrely, the only mainstream references came from the guitarist from U2 in his media blitz for Achtung Baby - ''oh, I've been listening to this other band from Ireland called My Bloody Valentine''.

This isn't really true. 'Loveless' got glowing reviews in major music media upon release: NME, Rolling Stone and Melody Maker ('''Loveless' is the outermost, innermost, uttermost rock record of 1991.'' ), it also reached #24 in the UK charts, which while hardly making it a smash hit, doesn't really make a case for it being ''loathed by the mainstream.''

And Gosteleradio, so sweet.

Of all of these I think the floor-tom one is the most valid. Last year's Splendour was full of them. Yannis from Foals beat the living shit out of his, as did Florence in her headlining slot. Pretty sure Passion Pit used them too. WAY TO MAKE NOISE, YOU GUYS
