There’s something almost Ween-esque about the way Tucker B’s traverse genres that makes their music familiar, but unmistakably theirs. On ‘Jungle’ and ‘Bear – the first tastes from their forthcoming new album, Nightmares in the key of ((((((WOW))))))) (try writing that on a CD spine) – they try their hand at gothic-country and kraut, respectively, but infuse them with enough surprises to keep things interesting. Like the warm synths that come out of nowhere about a minute-and-a-half into ‘Jungle’ and those trem-picked guitars that bring ‘Bear’, a song about ruining relationships quickly (but could also be about hirsute men), to a thrilling lyrical end: “And when I went to sleep/I stayed in bed for 14 weeks.” Both tracks and the new album – their fifth – were recorded at BJB Studios by Burke Reid, who has worked with The Drones, Jack Ladder and the Mess Hall recently, but is best known as Backpack #3 from Gerling. Oddly, for a band who have been around since 1994, it’s their first made in a proper studio. The others being made “at their favourite jetties and in their kitchens”. Bless.
