Boardwalk Empire - HBO

Charles Dumar  said about 3 years ago  or at  11:54AM on Thursday, April 22 2010 in television

Based on the book “Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City”

It’s got Scorsese involved with the producer of The Sopranos. Stars Steve Buscemi, Kelly McDonald, Michael K Williams (Omar in the Wire).

Set in prohibition times… Far out.

Going on the first ep it's fairly safe to say it's going to be the best new show of the year. Rubicon was probably ahead before yesterday.

Being a massive fan of Prohibition-era movies (Once Upon A Time In America, Untouchables, Miller's Crossing, etc.) this was always going to right up my alley, but I wasn't expecting a series this good. No bad performances (particularly Tommy from Snatch as a character of uniquely historical interest), amazing set-design (some of the advertising billboards especially) and great direction from Scorcese.

Can't praise this enough.

goldfoot  said about 2 years ago:

Just finished watching the first ep. I liked it enough but I'm not sure if it's going to be up to the standards of Deadwood or The Wire. It looks amazing, great visuals, but the script seems to be lacking a bit. It didn't seem to have that tremendous dialogue that HBO shows are reknown for. Not much happened plot wise but that's to be expected in a first episode when they're introducing characters.

Nice to see a cameo from 'Omar'. I hope he has a significant role in the future.

Gaston Means! How could you forget that yoghurt? He's one of my faves....
Gyp's death was a bit of an anticlimax. I actually like Margaret and don't understand why others don't.

My prediction: Tommy will rise up and kill Nucky to avenge his fathers death. At least, I hope so. I think someone else upthread also mentioned this.

shazzat  said about 5 months ago:

Dunno, I think Margaret's moral code seems to only apply when it suits her needs. She went to Nucky with eyes open, knew who he was and what he was capable of, happily took what she could from him and then betrayed him. She saw him as her ticket out of the tenements and she took the ride.

I don't think it's that simple. I agree she went to Nucky with eyes wide open, fully knowing what he was capable of (she has hidden evidence and coverd for him in the past remember), but she's also had enough - of his infidelity, of his greed. I think the whole storyline of her working with the hospital is to indicate that as she gains more independence, and gains more confidence in her own abilities, the less dependant she is on him and the less tolerant she's becoming of his corruption and greed. There's been consistent turning points throughout the 3 series - where Nucky has done something and the wedge between them grows wider. I think Owen was what really pushed her over... I don't think we're meant to see Margaret as some puritan that's driven by a moral code at all.

Nor do I think Margaret is meant to be Nucky's moral anything. The dynamics of their relationship is very different. than that.. it's a power play, because he believes he holds the power financially (as he does over Atlantic city), but she defies him as she's not seduced by money (any more).

My prediction: Tommy will rise up and kill Nucky to avenge his fathers death. At least, I hope so. I think someone else upthread also mentioned this.

That would be awesome... but I don't think anything is predictable with this show. Every time I think I know what will happen, something completely throws me.

I can now enter this thread as I've spent the last fortnight watching all three seasons.

Some notes:

I'm madly in love with Richard Harrow. I even swoon when his mask comes off. I'm scared every single episode that he's going to die - they better not kill him off!
I think Margaret is a great character - haterz be gone!
I'm devastated that Sleater is dead.
I hope Season 4 goes back to the slower, less violent pace of Season 1. I'm a bit tired of cringing all the time as they try to out-do themselves for most horrible and bloody death scene.

And finally, whenever Gaston Means (played by Stephen Root) is on screen I get the giggles because I can't help but think of Milton from Office Space (also played by Stephen Root).

kelele  said about 5 months ago:

Aaaaah that's why I love Gaston so much! ( I always liked the stapler guy in office space) Makes sense now.

tugboat  said about 5 months ago:

Just watched the 1st episode. (I know...very late to the party)
Amazing stuff.
Kelly MacDonald is such a great actress.
Steve Buscemi is pretty good in it too. I normally really dislike him.

Kinda in a good way.

I think MIchael Pitt is okay.
Hope there is more Richard Harrow in Season 2. Very interesting character.

hungryhungryhippo  said about 4 months ago:

I read recently that Jack Huston went out with Cat Deeley for a couple of years. I don't know why but this blew my mind.

tugboat  said about 4 months ago:

Wow. Also:

His paternal grandparents were director John Huston and Enrica (Soma), and his maternal grandparents were Hugh Cholmondeley, 6th Marquess of Cholmondeley and Lavinia Margaret (Leslie). [1] Through his maternal grandfather, Huston is descended from Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister of Great Britain, David Sassoon, the Treasurer of Baghdad, and Mayer Amschel Rothschild, who founded the Rothschild family international banking dynasty.

Yeah I saw that too Tugs. I think I'm prejudiced against rich people. Did not give me the horn.
